Toronto District School Board (TDSB) proposes closing pools and cutting music instructors (aka certified teachers) to make a $70M budget short fall.
The province has reduced per student funding by $1300/student/year since Doug Ford came into power, not accounting for inflation.
For those in Toronto Danforth, there's a virtual emergency public meeting with the Trustee, Sara Ehrhardt and the MPP Peter Tabuns on Thursday May 1 at 7:30pm.

Maintaining enough perspective at the moment to be a little bummed for some of the sincerely good candidates getting basically rinsed by what this election turned into. Even locally: Man, that's a lot of talent. Someone elect Bhutila Karpoche and Norm di Pasquale to things already before they get bored of running.
Given the number of consultations happening such as Trinity Bellwoods Park, RapidTO on Dufferin and Bathurst, a proposed protest bylaw, and a few Neighbourhood Streets Plans, my latest blog post rounds them all up. #BikeTO #TTC #WalkTO #TOpoli #VisionZero www.twowheeledpolitics.ca/2025/04/apri...

I'm shocked and horrified that someone got arrested at today's Critical Mass ride in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It seemed random and arbitrary, and could have happened to anyone of us.
They are in last few frames of this video, on the left of the screen, managing traffic for safety.
These rides are peaceful, they've been held on the last Friday of the month for 20 years or more.
Just for a friendly reminder, Toronto's next #CriticalMass ride is happening TOMORROW! Meet 6 PM at Gwendolyn MacEwen Parkette (33 Walmer Road). #BikeTO #TOpoli www.facebook.com/events/10432...
no wonder it's such a test of patience to drive in this blessèd city. although TBH i really don't care, as i far prefer to walk / bike / kickscoot / take public transit instead.
"Toronto is the busiest construction city in North America, according to a staff report before Council. At its peak last summer, construction caused the temporary closure of 24% of all city roads." [CBC]
the City of Toronto is proposing a poorly thought out bylaw delineating "bubble zones" around certain types of buildings which will suppress people's ability to protest. i hope it fails - and i also don't support any kind of discrimination that is already illegal under the Ontario Human Rights Code. we don't need a new bylaw!
Toronto still not willing to treat transit seriously. A light rail vehicle with 200 people on board will need to wait at the light before it can approach its stop, because… oh no reason. Just cars are special, folks.

yay! Ontario judge grants injunction that bars the provincial government from tearing out three Toronto bike lanes — at least until he can make a ruling on a Charter challenge about the issue: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/ontrio-bike-lane-injunction-1.7515518
Toronto's bike lanes are safe…FOR NOW, thanks to an injunction https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/ontrio-bike-lane-injunction-1.7515518

Happy Easter! Finally got around to writing about @cycletoronto.bsky.social's Charter challenge against Bill 212 which was held on Wednesday, April 16. Until a decision has been made, let's keep up the pressure, folks! #BikeTO #TOpoli #ONpoli #VisionZero www.twowheeledpolitics.ca/2025/04/bill...
Bill 212 Charter Challenge
Th City of Toronto is holding a "public"
consultation on establishing protest bubbles, zones around buildings and services considered "vulnerable".
I have mentioned in the past, that the city was fine when those buildings were ACTUALLY being targeted by protesters, as long as they were white. But now, people are marching past the same buildings, LITERALLY the same buildings, and suddenly: it's a problem.
Other "vulnerable" buildings, religious institutions, are not simply used for religious gatherings and ceremony. They function as community hubs, where plans are made to address and equities in the system. Black churches were where civil rights campaigns were planned. And they were bombed by white people.
But that's not what is happening now, in 2025. Religious buildings are being used to hold events that are criminal, according to international law.
Protests outside of those buildings are not protesting religious ceremonies. There is no parallel to be drawn with Black churches being targeted by white malevolence.
And let's imagine that a parallel were justifiably to be drawn:
There are no laws on the books designed to protect Black, Indigenous, or brown bodies. There are only laws designed to protect capital and those who control it.
We are the ones who will be targeted by this new by-law.
And if you doubt that, just note the deeply racist way in which this consultation has been implemented.
I invite you not to participate in the farcical display that is this "public consultation"
but rather to email engagement@toronto.ca and let them know that you have seen their trickery for what it is, and to call Councillor James Pasternak, who has championed this bit of theatre, at: 416-392-1371 or email him at councillor_pasternak@toronto.ca
Toronto Star’s @benspurr.bsky.social : The NY Times has published an investigation into the Therme development at Ontario Place. It found that while the company told the province it had a proven track record of operating six spas around the world, at the time it had only ever operated one.
After I asked about this, one of the attendees told me that he runs a local foodbank.
"I hate it. I feed 600 families a week, and we can barely keep up. Food banks shouldn't even exist."
No one should be starving in this city. We are the economic centre of Canada. The City of Toronto has allocated ~$750k for the hunger crisis in the 2025 budget. More than 350k people rely on food banks to survive, and that number has probably gone way up since the last time I checked.
