Nach 20 Minuten meldet er Erfolg und ich habe den Kollegen plötzlich sehr sehr lieb.

When writing plain-text files with collaborators, such as…

- #LaTeX, for instance on #Overleaf
- #reStructuredText, for instance for use with Sphinx/for @readthedocs
- #Markdown for many purposes.

…a practice I find very helpful is to:

1. Start every sentence on a new line, and
2. Not hard-wrap within sentences.

This makes it MUCH easier to read ordinary diffs and interpret the addition/removal/reordering of sentences, words, paragraphs, etc.

It's funny to me that many graduate students these days don't realize that you can actually install LaTeX on your own computer. The amazing impact of #overleaf. Grad students don't know how good they've got it.

Sadly though, development on mainstream LaTeX has stagnated, and it's already showing its age (lack of accessible PDF's, etc.). How long until it has to be abandoned? Or maybe it will hang around forever for a small FORTRAN-like community?

Anyone here regularly use #git to locally work on #overleaf projects? Today was the first time a project wouldn't let me pull because it insisted on git tokens (I already had set up). Ended up switching my git credential helper from `osxkeychain` to `store` (on #macOS) & now it works w/ fresh clone.

I've been feeling a bit guilty for using Overleaf for writing Latex (lock-in etc etc). But there seems to be a self-hostable community version for it. https://github.com/overleaf/overleaf . How did I miss that. Anyone actually using it self-hosted?

I know that #overleaf is hot shit among academics but let's be honest, nothing better than fast local #tex installation in your fav editor <3

FYI #Academics using #overleaf + git: there seems to be a problem where the cloned repo is different from the online version. At least we have two reproducible examples in my larger collab.

I know everyone loves their #Overleaf, but the recent outage might be a good reminder to reconsider if outsourcing something as inherently local as plain-text editing to a cloud-only service is actually a good idea.

What type of desktop software do you use to write a document in #latex ? Apart from online #overleaf ?
