Gotta love #LiFePo4 batteries... End of 2022 I ordered a batch of 18650s, and then... my scatter brain promptly forgot about them. They sat in an unopened box ever since.
Just now, beginning of 2025, I stumbled over them, and fully expected to have to dispose of them. Put them into a charger for testing and... they're fine. I'm pretty amazed. Not a battery geek, but... is this normal? 😁

@CelloMomOnCars A few days ago I listened to this podcast volts.wtf/p/should-we-put-util . The idea of storage everywhere is compelling. Con Ed is already doing this a bit. Putting batteries in their substations. With software they can make it work.

People in NYC are crazed. They hear lithium and think fire. Screw UL, #LiFePO4 . Old buildings' electrification can be resolved with safe batteries in apartments.

@CppGuy One word: #Tetraetyllead

IMHO it'll be inevitable that #Methanol #FuelCell-based #EV|s will be the future simply because:
1.#Lithium is scarce & expensive
2.#refueling will always be faster than #charging
3.#EnergyDensity of Methanol exceeds that of any #battery
4.#FussilFuel #Corporations can simply switchover pumps and flex their #EconomyOfScale and existing #Logistics to flood the market with cheap Methanol even if it has to be made 100% sustainable and without any fossil resources.
5.#EnergyStorage is another problem and #FuelCells can replace both #EmergencyPower systems running if #Diesel as well as the average #gasoline #generator.

Not to mention there needs to be #SystemChangeNotClimateChange and that necessitates way better #PublicTransport, regardless if #Trains, #Trams, #Trolleybuses or #FuelcellBuses (in that order)...

  • Otherwise shit won't change.

OFC what any #BEVs won't fix is the fact that most particle emissions are #tire #brake #dust...

  • And those are inherebtly unavoidable.unless we want to sacrifice #RoadSafety!

@jon @energisch_ @wmd Problem with #LithiumBatteries (actually only #LiCo / #LiIon / #LiPo, not #LiFePO4!) is that they tend to exothermically explode and gas out hydrofluoric acid when they degraded too far and/or get charged too fast...

It's also why my landlord won't allow me to install a charging wallbox at my fixed parking spot in the garage, because fire safety codes don't allow that - same with a canister of fuel!

  • Thus there's no benefit for anyone here to get a #BEV...

Same with Bicycles / Pedelecs in the cellar, tho since there have been thefts I'd definitely not put anything there that has even remotely some value...

Infosec.SpaceKevin Karhan :verified: (@kkarhan@infosec.space)@energisch_@troet.cafe @jon@gruene.social @wmd@chaos.social Trains they charge you an extra ticket and will fine you for fare-dodging. - Plus most trains providers ban bikes during rush hour *and* dangerous goods (i.e. any reasonable & working #Lithium battery >100Wh may fall under it as well)... I commuted for years on a train and I'm shure #DB didn't change the better since 2008-2013...

@CelloMomOnCars @falcennial @pixelpusher220 Shure, the overhead of a #FuelCell will not.make.it.practical in a #Smartphone for the foreseeable future, and #SodiumWetcells are slowly entrenching #LiFePO4 cells territory.

I do however expect that for #EnvoirmentalProtection alone, we'll see #Lithium cells being slowly phased out in a few decades like #NiCd, #mercury and #lead before them.

  • The only reason #LeadAcid wetcells are still used as #CarBattery is because they are disgustingly cheap and can provide high amperages for starter motors. Their weight inefficiency is not of big concern in cars.

Likewise I'm confident we see first #LiFePO4 then #SodiumWetcells then #FuelCells take over.

In fact I'm confident #MethanolFuelcell will be used as drop-in replacement for (diesel-)electric buses simply because of scalability and fire safety alone.

  • OFC the superior solution for regular bus lines are trolley buses, but being able to refuel on long-distance trips will certainly help conversion with long-haul bus services and #trucking beyond the "last-mile stop & go" delivery where drivers have their 8hr shifts and trucks can "slow-charge" at the depot at night.

In fact, #DeutschePost literally bought up an #electric #MiniTrick #startup just to get the "#CityScooter" #BEV|s made for them, and for couriers that only do stop & go these work fine.

@pandora_parrot yes and besides that I think #BatteryElectricVehicles will also die out again because #FuelCells using #Methanol at ambient temperature & pressure solve the "#charging" and "#battery" problems elegantly.

  • Also the huge amounts of expensive #UnfairTrade minerals like #Lithium and #Cobalt as well as poor #FireSafety of #LiIon / #LiCo / #LiPo cells with #LiFePO4 having noticeable lower vapacity and cell voltage makes it less attractive, cuz even if we assume a mere 30% efficiency (on par with naturally aspirated, fully-mechanical gasoline engines) tue #EnergyDensity and #range with #Methanol easily beats even the most expensive and high-tech battery cells, including some hot sodium-sulphur cells that are at ~ 400°C during operation...

Also espechally in the #USA and other places, people usually choose a #car to reach longer distances that have no #PublicTransport, thus #EV's may force them to a healther driving habit and regular stops, but that's seen as really inconvenient because it extends the trip time...
