The measles outbreak in Texas has now spread to New Mexico.
The measles vaccine is incredibly effective IF you get it.
Respirators also work well against measles. In this age of anti-vaxxers and the fall of public health, we need to use as many tools at our disposal to protect ourselves and our communities.
I’ve written a complete guide to respirators which includes information on how to choose one, where to buy them, how to fit test and more.

Tonight's #respirator distro with #MaskBlocPDX was another success! We handed out easily a few hundred masks at the "Anti-capitalism is for Lovers" #mutualaid fair, delayed a week from Valentine's Day because of the snow.
Apart from tabling at the occasional events like this one, we've done a good job connecting with the #FreeFridge projects in our region. These have ended up being one of the most productive channels for distributing respirators in the community.
I started wearing an N95 #respirator partly because of Delhi's record levels of air pollution, and partly because of mass surveillance and FRT.
It's pretty uncomfortable, but it turned out to have even more benefits. People living with me contracted all kinds of coughs and colds and fevers. I was singularly unaffected.
And then I learned from the Fediverse that #CovidIsNotOver.
Not wearing a mask in public now feels like being naked, and not in a good way.
#MaskBans? WTAF?
Since I want d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing (HoH) people to be able to lip-read, I'm awaiting my OmniMask from https://www.omnimask.com
SeeUs95 is another option, or CleanSpace (HALO and other models) is expensive even for used headsets.
Otherwise Flow Mask or similar reusables are definitely the way to go.
Might even be able to 3D print parts of it, if you have willing friends to 3D model / sculpt / produce them.
There's a reason I want an OmniMask.
~ it's so I can be the coolest doomer at school ~
But also because I want more people to feel comfortable being around me:
both the immunocompromised or carers,
and people who read lips to help with Auditory Processing Disorder, loss of hearing, d/Deafness;
or anyone who just feels more comfortable seeing whole faces.
I definitely don't understand the "I want to see your FACE" people,
but I don't generally set out with the intention of unnerving people
(until they upset me and I've tried conflict resolution skills, but unfortunately haven't fully concluded it. THEN I get ornery!)
Omni Mask: a clear / transparent / see-through / accessible thing to protect your from pathogens, the microbes that make you sick.
More than 51% of Autistic scholars agree: this is the *good* kind of masking in public!
anything on FB is now technophobe outreach -- which, if you have the patience for it, is immensely helpful.
Even just simple, blanket statements really help e.g.
Face masks reduce your risk of catching illnesses.
Face masks reduce your risk of developing serious illnesses.
FFP3 respirators are good-quality, safe face masks.
Sanitise or replace your respirator regularly to maintain protection from illnesses.

*Don't* get down with the sickness!

I've been in various healthcare facilities at least weekly throughout the pandemic (and still!) to continue managing a number of chronic issues.
Back when there were still #Alberta healthcare mask mandates, gatekeepers would tell me to my face that my P100 #respirator wouldn't work and be demanding I swap it for a #BaggyBlue procedure mask.
Ironically our more awful govt has made this easy for me now as I'm no longer hassled or threatened with denial of access.
In case of emergency, always make sure you are wearing appropriate personal protective equipment...
This is amazing, not only a lower cost CPC for measuring mask fit and ultrafine particles in a room, but also a new probe to measure fit of a respirator without destroying it, check out the video from @openaeros and @masknerd to see how it works ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_P0gM5Gudo ). 1/
My latest article is about the shooting of CEO Brian Thompson and how NYC Mayor Adams seems poised to use it as an excuse to bring in a ban on masks (which he’s wanted to do for awhile).
Mask bans are discriminatory, ableist and put lives at risk.
We are still IN an airborne pandemic. Everyone - whether disabled or not - should have the legal right to protect themselves from infection.
People need masks for all kinds of reasons. Pollution, wildfire smoke, allergies AND Covid. No one should be forced to risk their health because a necessary medical device has been criminalized for absolutely no reason.
Make no mistake - these bans won’t stop crime. Studies have shown that sunglasses obscure identity more effectively.
The only reason to ban masks is to pander to those on the right still angry about mask mandates - and to make it easier for the government to surveil its citizens.
Ironically those who screamed the loudest about freedom and bodily autonomy during mask mandates are eerily quiet about mask bans - despite the fact that they represent escalating fascism and government overreach.
We really are on our own.
Please - mask up. Do it in solidarity with disabled people who NEED masks in order to safely access public spaces. Do it to support the Covid aware people who just want to avoid infection. Do it to send a message to the government that you don’t believe anyone is expendable. Do it to protect our right to mask in the future.
It’s not too late - but we must get loud, work fast and wear our masks.

Some cool images of particles being captured by an N95 respirator. "The 'big'' crystals are about 1.5 microns. The smaller captured particles are as small <as> viruses like COVID." ( https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1865453640510824790.html ). 1/
Oh, look! I made a thing
https://www.printables.com/model/1048389-simple-respirator-mask-spectacle-kit
“If all states had imposed restrictions similar to those used in the 10 most restrictive states, excess deaths would have been an estimated 10% to 21% lower..." meaning about a quarter million fewer U.S. #COVID deaths over the same period. By having the red states follow the more restrictive mask policies of blue states. Pretty simple, really. Science doesn't care if you don't understand it or believe it.

Let me be clear about one thing:
The 26 who got it did not walk into this meeting thinking "darn that guy has a nasty cough but forget it I'll just do this meeting and be fine".

#CovidConscious crowd: I’m sure I saw some discussion of techniques for stapling excess #respirator material together under chin to improve fit on small faces …
But I can’t find it now and I don’t want to just start stapling willy-nilly!
Has anyone done this or did I imagine it?

COVID QUESTION: how do you know when to replace the filters for your respirator? i wear mine everywhere and go out regularly
is it time-based or do you just kinda wait for the insides to look brown?
also... mine sat collecting dust for six months, how does this complicate things?
