An iconic “2CV” in Amsterdam’s “Swammerdambuurt”. Its full name is “Citroën 2 Chevaux”. In the Netherlands, it’s nicknamed “Lelijk eendje” (“ugly duck”).

The area is named after Dutch biologist and microscopist Jan Swammerdam (1637–1680). He is known for his groundbreaking work on insect anatomy and for being one of the first to observe red blood cells.


The neighborhood is located in the Weesperzijde area, near the Amstel River.

The intersection of Nieuwe Herengracht and Entrepotdok is located in Amsterdam’s Plantage district, a neighborhood with a strong historical and cultural character.

Nieuwe Herengracht, part of the city’s famous canal system, extends from the Herengracht and runs between the Amstel River and the Scharrebiersluis near Entrepotdok. Built in , it marks the eastern edge of the canal belt. ️

At this junction, several bridges help connect different parts of the neighborhood. The “Walter Süskind Bridge” (no. 237) links Nieuwe Herengracht to the Weesperzijde, serving as a key crossing for both pedestrians and cyclists. Nearby, the “M.S. Vaz Dias Bridge” (no. 238) and the “Hortus Bridge” (no. 239) also play an important role in keeping the area well connected.

Ringdijk is a former residential address in the Watergraafsmeer neighborhood and has been squatted for quite some years by the “Anarcha-Feminist Group”.

With two fierce, seemingly Asian styled, leopards on its facade it’s hard to miss.

The Ringdijk, which surrounds the Watergraafsmeer polder, functions both as a flood defense and a scenic street with a mix of modern and traditional homes.

To safeguard the area against rising water levels, the dike has recently been raised by approximately 30 centimeters.
