#SCMP writes that #ccp #China has revealed a #cablecutter that will be able to cut #cables in the bottom of the seas regardless if they are fortified or not.

This would be a disaster if #Chinese merchant ships would be equipped with these and they just keep on cutting cables, they cause a lot of damaged with anchors already.

#Cop28 summary from the South China Morning Post #SCMP #HongKong - "Cop28’s watered down draft text criticised for omitting #FossilFuel#PhaseOut

- Critics panned the watered down draft text that suggests ‘reducing’ use of #FossilFuels, and scraps previous call to ‘phase out’ #coal, #oil, and #gas.

Deals at #UN #ClimateSummit must be passed by consensus among the nearly 200 countries present.

A draft of a potential #climate deal at the #Cop28 #summit on Monday suggested a range of options countries could take to reduce greenhouse gas #GHG #emissions, but omitted the “phase out” of fossil fuels many nations have demanded.

#UN Secretary General Antonio #Guterres said a central benchmark of success for Cop28 would be whether it yielded a deal to phase out #coal, #oil and #gas use fast enough to avert disastrous #ClimateChange.

“That doesn’t mean that all countries must phase out fossil fuels at the same time,” he told reporters at the #Dubai summit, which is scheduled to end on Tuesday but could go on longer if negotiations drag on.

A new draft of a Cop28 agreement, published by the United Arab Emirates’ #UAE presidency of the summit, proposed various options but did not refer to a “phase out” of all fossil fuels, which had been included in a previous draft.

The draft deal listed eight options that countries “could” use to cut emissions, including by: “reducing both consumption and production of fossil fuels, in a just, orderly and equitable manner so as to achieve net zero by, before, or around 2050”.

Other actions listed included tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030, “rapidly phasing down unabated coal” and scaling up technologies including those to capture #CO2 emissions out of the atmosphere.

One #European diplomat told #Reuters the new text was weak on ambition and read like a “menu where you can pick and choose your dish at will”.

A coalition of more than 100 countries including oil and gas producers the #UnitedStates, #Canada and #Norway, as well as the European Union #EU and climate-vulnerable island nations, wanted an agreement that included language to phase out fossil fuels, a feat not achieved in 30 years of the UN summits."

Oh, by the way: Where is #SCMP reporter #MinnieChan who disappeared a full month ago after covering the Xiangshan defence and security forum in #Beijing for her #HongKong-based employer?

Shit like this is happening way too often in #China. And the explanation delivered by SCMP is beyond laughable. #media #oppression #mediafreedom #humanrights theguardian.com/world/2023/dec

The Guardian · Fears raised after Hong Kong journalist fails to return from China tripBy Helen Davidson

My latest article is on the #SouthChinaMorningPost's website. It recaps the history of a #Haida totem pole — carved by iconic #FirstNations #artist Reg Davidson — that has been in the South #China city of #Guangzhou since the '90s. In addition to examining the fascinating story of how the #totempole made its way from #Vancouver to Guangzhou, the article also uses the pole's weathered state as a metaphor for the currently abysmal state of China-Canada relations. #SCMP
