This week I plan to go to the Madison May Day protest. I have a good idea for a protest sign...stay tuned. :)
If you're in the Madison area, join me and others who oppose the Trump administration and its attacks on workers, immigrants, higher education, science, the economy...!
The Madison Public Library made a tool to estimate the value you get out of your public library: https://www.madisonpubliclibrary.org/about/value
I guess it's specific to the Madison library, but I think the estimate is good for any US-based public library.
For my own usage, it tells me that for every tax dollar I pay that goes to the library, I get $10.63 in value. What a deal!
(Coincidentally, my family does a monthly donation to the Friends of the Verona Public Library fund...of $10!)
One of the reasons I picked the city I live in: no billboards in the downtown core.
Its rather nice.

If you don't have plans for the weekend in #MadisonWI: This is going to be great! https://www.wortfm.org/the-freedom-of-biking-with-artist-julia-bourdet/ April 27, 11 am at the Arboretum
And here's the segment. As per usual, I look freakishly tall when standing next to other people... https://www.wmtv15news.com/2025/04/17/just-time-spring-new-bike-path-opens-madisons-east-side/ #FediBikes #MadisonWI
We convinced the reporter to do a live segment while biking herself! She took a BCycle down the ramp of the Autumn Ridge overpass #FediBikes #MadisonWI
New coffee shop across the street is opening today. Step 1: Add to #OpenStreetMap https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/835544967

It’s been a wonderful first half-day in #MadisonWI. We got to check out some of the old stomping grounds from our time in graduate school 25 years ago, especially State Street and the Capitol Square. We spent some time at the #Wisconsin #IceCube Particle #Astrophysics Center (WIPAC) and met with colleagues of ours there. It’s good to be in our academic home, where we first met.
I am excited for @jodi’s #colloquium in the #Physics Department tomorrow afternoon!

Hands Off! rally at the WI capitol. I'm a horrible estimator of crowd size, but there were a helluva lot of people there. In the last photo, you can see a sea of people from the capitol steps all the way down State St. to the UW library mall.
If you want to keep track of election results from #MadisonWI #DaneCounty, @epaulson.bsky.social (don't think he's on Fedi), has a new lite version of his results dashboard: https://epaulson.github.io/dane-county-election-results/lite.html Refreshes automatically every minute, straight from the Dane Co API.
Following up yesterday's post, I figured the #MadisonWI 3D data viz was worth a short blog post with code. #rayshader is very powerful, but also has a steep initial learning curve. I learned a lot from @tylermorganwall's and other people's documentation and blog posts, and so I figured I should contribute back myself. https://haraldkliems.netlify.app/posts/2025-03-31-a-3d-map-of-downtown-madison/
It's a rainy Sunday, and so I spent a lot of time futzing around with a high-quality version of the #MadisonWI DSM 3D render. 5000x5000px, 128 samples in #Rayshader. This was about as large as I could get it without crashing #RStats. #DataViz
