"37% of the responding department chairs [in #physics and #astronomy] said they expect to enroll fewer first-year graduate students in the fall of 2025 than they did the previous year…The number of first-year graduate students in physics and astronomy is anticipated to decline by about 13%. This is a projected decline of about 600 first-year graduate students."

The #ERC-funded Q-Arctic project is exploring the consequences of global warming for the #Arctic. ❄️🌿 The challenge is to reconcile the process scale –what happens in the soil or a water body– & the scale of satellite observations 🛰️ & model simulations 🌐, given the heterogeneity of Arctic landscapes. 💧🧊🌲 Last week, the team met at Schloss Ringberg in Bavaria 🏰 to discuss the current state of the project. This will be a challenge to the fediverse connecting abilities: I need to make a costume of a #trilobite and of #Anomalocaris. I am looking for any help: someone has made one already and is happy to share the details, a costume designed willing to take up the challenge, a handwork hobbyist with a knack for sewing/cardboard magic who always want to launch their skills onto a bigger stage. We are making a #science show for kids as part of my #ERC project MindTheGap and we will be explaining #evolution using #fossils. #Cambrian fossils 😄 If you have any hints, contacts, old costumes, please get in touch. Join our institute in Potsdam, Germany! We offer an ERC-funded PhD student positions at the @mpi_grav in Potsdam.

We are particularly interested in hiring creative, proactive and motivated candidates who flourish at working in a vibrant, interdisciplinary and synergistic group. Successful candidates will join the research group “Symmetries in Gravity and Amplitudes” with the Quantum Gravity and Unified Theories division.

The PhD research will focus on mathematical structures of scattering amplitudes, more specifically amplitudes associated with Riemann surfaces as they appear in string theory.

The successful applicant will conduct their research projects at the AEI in Potsdam, and they will have to enrol and receive their PhD degree from the Humboldt University in Berlin. The expected duration of the PhD is three to four years. Applicants are required to have a Master degree by the start of the PhD program.
