Today Im mostly looking at how to make the #ViewerJS #iframe at least partially responsive (have a better height re screensize maybe). So Im staring at SO a lot for hack ideas. This is their AI answer warning. Very interesting considering 'AI' takes everything we make but we don't want anything it gives back, at least not in the main tech forums. Uni's should take note of this, but probably dont even know.
The program for grad students at Virginia Tech to help them become future faculty members with a broad perspective of higher education in the US and in Europe (#GlobalPerspectivesProgram) has been canceled. They were scheduled to visit Switzerland, France, and Italy mid May. As GPP2013 alumna I would’ve welcomed them at #ZHAW. Bummer
The emerging distinction between Harvard and Columbia is just so stark. Who would send their children to Columbia University? What kind of graduate student would accept an offer there? Is Columbia now mostly known for cowardly fealty? #uspol #academicchatter
Always this struggle to find good data to interprete #XRD data.
Is there a non-#Paywalled database to get diffraction peaks for choosen crystaks?
I mean, X ray stuff is not a 'new' technology.
I assumed they did powder diffractrometry to any (solid) substance ever synthesized.
Any idea?

edit: Thanks Bubble.
https://rruff.info does the job.
Just realised that I started teaching 29 years ago today. And I still look at each new semester with a mixture of joy and trepidation. Best job in the world, in so many ways #AcademicChatter
Just chatted to a colleague who wondered whether there was any point in submitting their manuscript to a US press. Will they preemptively self-censor? Do they still have a viable business model? #AcademicChatter
“We're supposed to have time to think, we’re supposed to be creative, we’re supposed to be the people who are coming up with new solutions…how can you do that if you spend all your day filling in forms?"
Les vacances commenceront jeudi soir, mais la majorité des étudiant·e·s semble croire que c'est aujourd'hui.
The NGI adopts the open social web for all its comms. Hosting and serving its own data, and federating fully. Shows what is possible for future internet if we want it. ALL universities should do this, to me its obvious.
The NGI is an important project and forum, Id urge you to take part.

“When our academics fear travelling to major conferences or partnering with US institutions, the impacts ripple through the entire global knowledge ecosystem.”
Harvard professors sue over Trump's review of $9 billion in funding - This is nothing short of an overt attack on #HigherEd in general and #Universities in particular. #Academia is under siege from the #Fascists in DC. #AcademicChatter https://www.reuters.com/legal/harvard-professors-sue-over-trumps-review-9-billion-funding-2025-04-12/
Last year at the Open Science Retreat (#OSR24NL) I have been introduced to nanopubs by @egonw and created my first nanopub declaring citations for a paper using CiTOs (citation ontologies).
Now, travelling to #OSR25CH, due to issues with the train network foreseen with plenty of time, I used the opportunity and created a new one ( https://w3id.org/np/RAicq7k9QHX8EG8ho7Baib9GxHsU18O0tyFCZ4tbbGGPA ) for my latest publication on teaching #Snakemake on #HPC systems.
The teaching material is — again — in desperate need of additions and overhaul, but that is for another day.
Caused by two recent examples I've seen, where anouncements for PhD positions had some funny "desired requirements" (experience in teaching, high skills in writing scientific publications) I would enjoy further examples like this.
The latest Alternative Social Media blog post is about a couple new items we have in our bibliography. There's a new special issue of the Internet Policy Review, and two of the articles focus on governance on the fediverse.
