Ok, a question for #database #dbms nerds. Many years ago I worked on a join order optimizer that used a heuristic formula to estimate the number of rows produced by an equijoin, based on the number of rows in the two tables being joined and the number of distinct values in the join keys. This formula came from an academic paper, but I can't remember what the formula was or find the paper. Does this ring a bell for anyone? Boosts appreciated...

When using a #MySQL database, is it possible in one go, when adding a new column to an existing table, to use one default value for existing columns (initial migration, so to speak), but another for every new row going forward (real default)?
Scenario: I want to set the value in pre-existing columns to true, but in all subsequent rows to false by default.

There's a lot of improvements coming out in #PostgreSQL 17, but one we're most looking forward to are the failover slot synchronization improvements directly benefiting native high availability. This will allow logical replication to continue working in the event of a primary failover.
