Samson and Delilah, Jan Lievens, c. 1626 - c. 1627
Delilah seduced Samson into telling her the secret of his superhuman strength, the source of which lay in his long hair. Lievens painted Samson asleep on Delilah’s lap. She hands a pair of scissors to the frightened man so that he can cut off Samson’s hair. In their early years, Lievens and Rembrandt – who shared a workshop – regularly looked at one another’s work. Rembrandt’s influence can be discerned in the
expressive rendering of the faces.

Two Teapots, Het Moriaanshooft, c. 1685 - c. 1690
The form of these two teapots is almost identical and is derived from Chinese stoneware. They were produced shortly after each other in the same Delft pottery. The blue and white teapot was made when Jacob Hoppesteyn (and from 1671 his widow Jannetje) was in charge of the factory, the coloured one under the directorship of their son Rochus. Because the shape of the teapots is so similar, their very different decorations stand out all the more.

The Lords of Montfoort, anonymous, c. 1400
Four Dutch knights kneel before the Virgin. The first three died in 1345 in the Battle of Warns against the Frisians; the fourth was badly wounded. Behind them stands Saint George, their patron saint. The coats of arms above them show that they belong to the De Rover family of Montfoort. The painting is a ‘commemorative panel’ to honour their memory.

Redingote or Great-Coat Dress, anonymous, c. 1786 - c. 1789
The origin of the redingote lies in long men’s coats with a cutaway front, the riding coat. It is a striking example of the influence men’s fashion exerted on women’s fashion. A redingote for ladies consisted of an overcoat or gown, and a loose skirt in a contrasting colour, which enhanced the coat-like effect. Olive green and pale pink were a popular combination at the end of the 18th century.

Two garden vases with the Four Seasons, Jacob Cressant, 1714
These two vases were almost certainly made for the Elsenburg country estate in Maarssen, the property of Amsterdam merchant Theodoor de Leeuw. The classical shape is decorated in several places with asymmetrical ornaments that herald the Rococo style. Examples are the large scrolls above the reliefs representing the seasons.

Cupid, Pier Jacopo Alari Bonacolsi, c. 1520
Antico worked in Mantua, where for many years he was in the service of the noble Gonzaga family. He specialized in the manufacture of bronze statuettes, whose subject matter and style were modelled on examples from Classical antiquity. This particular statuette may have been intended for the collection of Isabella d’Este, the art-loving wife of Francesco Gonzaga.

Armchair, anonymous, c. 1615 - c. 1625
Chairs of this type, with a rectangular upholstered seat and back, were found throughout Europe and virtually everywhere were called ‘Spanish chairs’, after the source of the original model. They were made in all kinds of wood and in various sizes, some soberly decorated, others more lavishly ornamented.
