#Baseline

I don't like to be told how to think about something, but this article about "How to think about Baseline and polyfills" by my colleague Jeremy Wagner does a great 👏 job on explaining how the #Baseline project people think about polyfills: web.dev/articles/baseline-and-. "Baseline does not consider polyfills as a part of its messaging. For example, if a feature has Limited availability, but is polyfillable for all browsers, that feature is never assumed to be either Newly or Widely available". 💡

👏 There's now an #ESLint rule to check the #Baseline status of CSS features: web.dev/blog/eslint-baseline-i.

```
If I could help non disabled people understand one thing about being disabled, it would be how important maintaining a baseline is.
When you’re chronically ill, your baseline is everything.
Even minor setbacks can be catastrophic, so we have to do a risk analysis before literally ANY activity
If you’re asking a disabled person to use valuable spoons… be prepared to hear “No”.
It’s not because they’re rude or they don’t like you or they’re “not trying enough”.
It’s because they know their body and they’ve assessed the risk of a setback to be too high.
When this happens, please respect their choice.
Imagine how hard it would be for you to constantly have to say “No” to people.
To pass up fun activities because you know you need to prioritize a medical appointment or things like cooking and cleaning.
That’s our reality. We’re working with such a small amount of resources that we have nothing extra to spare.
Boundary setting is incredibly hard, don’t make it harder for us by gaslighting and guilting us.
It’s impossible to understand until you go through it, so please take us at our word.
We’re the ones who suffer the setback. The ones who lose hard earned gains when we push too hard.
Support us, believe us, and let us say “No”
Bookmark this under »funny news«, but 13 years after this css feature was added to Chrome Version 15, it was rolled out for Safari and mobile Safari Version 18.2 in December ’24 and is now considered as widely available aka. »baseline 2024«. The `@page` CSS at-rule sets the page-specific dimensions and margins for content such as printed documents, ebooks, or slides. I know, you are […]
#Baseline question: Currently Baseline seems to be defined via a set of browsers and the features they support at a particular moment in time.
Presumably the browser set would evolve if a new browser gets enough market share to justify its inclusion.
What happens if that browser is missing a particular feature supported by the other browsers?
Does that imply that Baseline 2025 could hypothetically include *less* features than Baseline 2024 if it included a new browser? I feel like *losing* features is something you wouldn't expect in Baseline, much like you don't expect a version to go backwards.
Is there any expected outcome for this particular scenario?
