Another consistent feature of the American war on migrants, is a sort of fascist two-step surrounding the term "criminal." Typically, and even long before Trump, white supremacists in government office will justify hunting down and brutally suppressing migrants by claiming that they are only going after dangerous "criminals," often while invoking largely isolated stories of migrants committing violent crimes, to generate the necessary fear and outrage needed to maintain public support for these policies. The reality however is that once you see the system functioning in real time, the "dangerous" or "violent" part stops mattering, and folks end up being targeted for minor offenses, or even the civil "crime" of overstaying their visas in the United States; particularly under right wing reactionary governments, but even more so under the Trump regime and the modern fascist GOP.
Take for example the recent news that nearly forty international students had their visas cancelled and were ordered to leave the United States by the Trump administration for minor civil offenses, including in one case, a speeding ticket.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/apr/07/trump-student-visas-deportation
Deported over a speeding ticket? Dozens of US students’ visas abruptly revoked
"Lisa is one of several students across states who found their legal status revoked by the US government on 4 April, without prior notice or clear explanation. University statements show that at least 39 students have been affected, including UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC San Diego, Stanford, Ohio State, the University of Tennessee, the University of Kentucky, Minnesota State University and the University of Oregon.
An online self-reported data sheet created by affected students suggests the issue may be more widespread. Students from 50 universities reported their visas were canceled around 4 April, with many noting that they had prior records, some limited to citations or non-criminal offenses.
This secret wave of revocation came a few days after the US secretary of state, Marco Rubio, announced the revocation of 300 or more student visas. “We do it every day. Every time I find one of these lunatics, I take away their visas,” he said at a news conference on 27 March, referring to students he described as national security threats.
Lisa’s university had included a screenshot of her Sevis record in the message. Termination was logged on 4 April by a system administrator, with a note: “Individual identified in criminal records check and/or has had their VISA revoked.”
Please keep in mind here that I couldn't find any evidence, anywhere, that the students targeted in this story participated in anti-genocide protests or any activities Downmarket Mussolini has defined as "anti-American." The purpose here doesn't appear to be a question of ideological policing, or political reprisals - this is the regime deporting foreign students because it hates foreign students and ruining these young people's lives helps the nazis make their nativist deportation quotas. The only relevant "crime" any of these folks committed appears to be that they were foreign students who could have their visas revoked and then be deported under the guise of purging the US of foreign "criminals."
One of the most important necessary illusions to maintain (largely bipartisan) public support for the American war on migrants, is the idea that the fascist repression structures used to target brown noncitizens are only been used on "bad hombre" criminals who have snuck across the border for nefarious purposes. Bizarrely, this delusion remains popular with a US public that would rather not see how the sausage is made, even as the Trump regime actively targets migrant communities in America who have been granted state protection, are seeking asylum, and are otherwise "playing by the rules" that supposedly justifies brutalizing anyone who isn't following "the process" to enter and reside in the United States.
For example, since Trump took office back on January 20th, 2025, the regime has revoked the protected status and demanded the "self-deportation" of hundreds of thousands of law abiding immigrants registered with and monitored by government programs designed to curb illegal entry into the United States by offering a legal pathway to residency; including many people who are residing in America precisely because US foreign policy and exploitation has rendered their countries of origin objectively unsafe to return to. These folks aren't drug smugglers, or coyotes running undocumented people across the border, they are for all intents and purposes refugees created by US imperialist policy and they are precisely the kind of migrants apologists for our fascist deportation regime claim won't be targeted - a fact that has changed drastically under the tender mercies of Trump's unofficial Secretary for White Nationalist Shit, Stephen Miller.

Trump’s DHS revokes legal status for migrants who entered the US on Biden-era CBP One app
"CBP One was a cornerstone of the Biden administration’s strategy to create and expand legal pathways to enter the United States in an attempt to discourage illegal border crossings. By the end of December, 936,500 people had been allowed to enter with CBP One appointments at border crossings with Mexico. President Donald Trump ended CBP One for new entrants on his first day in office, stranding thousands in Mexico who had appointments into early February.
Trump has ended and revoked temporary status for many who benefited under Biden’s policies. Homeland Security said Monday that Biden’s use of parole authority — more than any president since it was created in 1952 — “further fueled the worst border crisis in U.S. history.”
Homeland Security said last month that it was revoking another form of parole for 532,000 people from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela who flew to the country at their own expense with a financial sponsor. It ends April 24.
The Trump administration has also announced an end to Temporary Protected Status for 600,000 Venezuelans and about 500,00 Haitians, though a federal judge temporarily put that on hold, including for about 350,000 Venezuelans who had been scheduled to lose TPS on Monday. TPS is granted in 18-month increments to people already in the U.S. whose countries are deemed unsafe for return due to natural disaster or civil strife."
Ultimately I chose this story to demonstrate how week after week, the Trump regime is quietly enacting an immigration policy designed to produce and entrench an American white ethnostate, and by and large this news doesn't really penetrate the public consciousness. When you combine the figures provided in this article alone, we're talking about the rapid expulsion of almost two million people who are objectively *not* the bloodthirsty "illegal" predators the regime claims these policies are designed to stop; newsflash, hardcore narco-terrorists don't register with the US government via phone app when they arrive in America. They are however nonwhite people Stephen Miller can parade in front of an extremely racist American public in a sort of fascist theater show designed to assure crackers that the government is "keeping them safe" from people with the wrong skin tone. Furthermore, despite what the Trump regime would have you believe about deterrence, anyone who has studied the history of US immigration laws can tell you that shutting off the legal pathways for, again, what amount to refugees of US imperialist policy, to enter and remain in the United States will simply *increase* the number of undocumented people who sneak into the country illegally. The conditions that caused them to flee to America aren't going to change, migrants just aren't going to register with the US government anymore because it means inviting DHS and ICE to pick them off as low hanging fruit to make the white nationalist regime's quotas.
#StephenMiller needs a straight jacket, medication, no internet, and constant supervision or ... the chair. Whatever was good enough for the Rosenberg's.
Given the stunning level of illegality and disregard for civil rights the Trump regime has deployed in its fascist war on student protestors who oppose a US-backed genocide in Gaza, would it surprise you at all to learn that the Department of Homeland Security probably lied their asses off to get the warrant they used to search two student dorm rooms for activists they'd targeted for illegal deportations?
https://theintercept.com/2025/03/28/ice-warrants-columbia-students-gaza-protests/
Ice Got Warrants Under “False Pretenses,” Claims Columbia Student Targeted Over Gaza Protests
"Earlier this month, while hunting for Columbia University students to deport over their ties to Gaza protests, the Trump administration convinced a federal judge to sign off on search warrants for two students’ dorm rooms — then raided the residences with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
As details about the warrants have emerged, however, so have allegations that federal agents misled the court and secured the warrants under “false pretenses,” as one of the students whose room was searched, Yunseo Chung, claimed in a lawsuit challenging her deportation.
The warrants were predicated on probable cause that Columbia was “harboring” students who were in the country illegally, court filings indicate. Chung, however, is a lawful permanent resident, notwithstanding the Trump administration’s efforts to deport her based on her arrest and citation at a Gaza sit-in. She has lived in the U.S. since she was 7 years old.
“The idea that they went before a federal magistrate judge and said, ‘We have to search Ms. Chung’s residence for evidence of Columbia harboring her’ — that shows they’re willing to lie to a judge,” said Nathan Yaffe, an immigration attorney."
This story isn't particularly complicated; DHS told a judge they needed search warrants because Colombia was "harboring and concealing illegal aliens on its campus" specifically to find two students it knew had legal status to be in the country. Of course Trump's warpig lapdog Marco Rubio is arguing that the student(s) were "illegal" because he unilaterally revoked their student visas/green cards, but actually he can't legally do that and since the government hasn't brought the matter before an immigration judge, the targets of the warrant were straight up ineligible for the crime the warrant was seeking to find evidence for or suspects for an arrest.

Many critics, who almost invariably do not work in the fields of historical study or education, will reflexively scoff at the idea that the Trump regime is attempting to erase, or re-write history in a way that supports a Christian Nationalist worldview as the official truth and indeed the only valid, legal way to speak about history; often while admitting that Trump is functionally illiterate and certainly doesn't read much history. Of course that argument is irrelevant because he's surrounded by a whole bunch of white nationalist freaks who certainly do read and care about history, in so much as it furthers their project to transform America into a permanent fascist dictatorship and white ethnostate; Stephen Miller, who is clearly functioning as the regime's Goebbels, has certainly read a history book or two. Even setting that obvious reality aside however, sometimes Trump's executive orders just come right out and admit this is the plan. Take for example Der Führer's recent order to put noted white nationalist (and Vice President) JD Vance in charge of scrubbing the Smithsonian museum (and zoo) complex of "improper ideology."
https://www.commondreams.org/news/trump-smithsonian-executive-order
'Unabashed Fascism': Trump Executive Order Targets 'Improper Ideology' at Smithsonian
"U.S. President Donald Trump has elicited a fresh wave of anger after he signed an executive order on Thursday targeting exhibits or programs critical of the United States at the Smithsonian Institution, a sprawling network of largely free museums and Washington, D.C.'s National Zoo.
The order aims to prevent federal money from going to displays that "divide Americans based on race" or "promote programs or ideologies inconsistent with federal law and policy," as well as remove "improper ideology" from Smithsonian's museums, education centers, and research centers.
"This is unabashed fascism," wrote the journalist Lauren Wolfe on X on Thursday. Amy Rutenberg, a history professor at Iowa State University, wrote: "Last week, while visiting several Smithsonian museums, I kept wondering how long it would take for this administration to direct exhibits to be pulled. Not long, it turns out."
Look, if you think I'm being uncharitable about the purpose of this executive order, you can simply read the order yourself (here: https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/03/restoring-truth-and-sanity-to-american-history/) because Downmarket Mussolini makes it very clear this is about erasing the history of slavery, structural racism, the existence of trans women, and anything that makes white people uncomfortable about the history of a white supremacist country built on chattel slavery and genocide. Trump even pinned the tail on the donkey by instructing the interior secretary to reinstall statues and monuments removed or changed since January 1st, 2020; and if your memory is failing you, that date is clearly about undoing projects to remove monuments to racists and Confederate slavers, in response to the efforts of the Black Lives Matter movement and the George Floyd protests.
Anyone arguing this is about preserving history from ideology (a phrase that makes zero sense because history is affected by the ideologies governing human behavior at the time it happens; obviously) somehow, is literally pushing fascist propaganda; this is about establishing an official narrative in support of a white nationalist permanent social and political order, and slowly eliminating any source of facts that might argue with that narrative. This is ideological policing, and history has shown us that these efforts to rewrite the past and eliminate dissenting narratives typically end in, literal, mass graves.
@TomWellborn #StephenMiller is #Goebbels progeny. I’d stake my life on it.
An admin that is going to want the vote of #SCOTUS Chief Justice #JohnRoberts might do well to recall that Roberts spent years in private law practice.
One lawyer leading the anti-#Trump advocacy surmised that the #DOJ is “trying to play to #Trump, & #StephenMiller,” the deputy White House chief of staff. “It’s a very bad strategy,” the attorney added. “We’re by the day gaining more credibility with the Supreme Court by just not being crazy about court orders & judges.”
Recently, a number of media analysts who seem to have forgotten fascism is a word, have looked towards the dark days of McCarthyism in the US to find historical comparisons for the Trump regime's fascist attempts to transform American society into a white ethnostate dictatorship. There are valid reasons to use this comparison as there *are* eerie parallels to be found between the McCarthyist American right's ever expanding war against made up "communist infiltrators" and both Trump's actions, and the responses to it from a mainstream establishment far more committed to profit than civil rights; including the weaponization of fear to silence objections and quell dissent, the pre-marking of folks ideologically opposed to fascism for reprisal, and the willing capitulation in advance of much of the US establishment to a fascist agenda. Placed in the proper context, which includes noting that the Trump regime is merely installing a fascist dictatorship through a new type of McCarthyism, the analogy is quite useful for getting people to understand how the regime is operating, and how its methods might be countered.
The problem of course is that context is often missing. Few if any of the folks referencing McCarthyism would be willing to admit that even McCarthyism was just another fascist takeover project designed to eradicate dissent under the guise of "anti-communism." Hell, you can still find articles about Senator Joe McCarthy using conspiracy theories to defend Nazi war criminals who slaughtered American soldiers on the Smithsonian website (https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/senator-mccarthys-nazi-problem-180975174/) - at least until Trump deletes them. In that context, the use of McCarthyism as a more genteel accusation than fascism, which is how a lot of folks writing in mainstream sources appear to be using it, is nonsensical; McCarthyism was just a project to install fascism in America.
How successful that project was depends a lot of whether or not you think it ended with McCarthy's fall, the defeat of Goldwater in the 1964 US presidential election, the implosion of Nixon, or basically never; speaking for myself I'd say you don't get Trumpism without the US War on Terror, which in turn doesn't happen without the legacy of Vietnam and the COINTELPRO program, which ultimately spawned out of McCarthyism and the Cold War struggle against "communism." In that context, it's probably better to understand the modern American fascist movement as a descendent of McCarthyism, rather than a totally novel expression of it.
Furthermore, while the repressive tactics and ideological policing of the Trump regime patterns well with America's fifties-era Red Scare, it's important to understand that Trumpism has already moved beyond many of the goals the McCarthyists were trying to accomplish. While anti-communism often stood in for white nationalism, and supremacist power structures, it ostensibly focused on ideological policing; the Trump regime however is already targeting people for who, or what they are, not just what they believe; the anti trans pogrom, the bipartisan war on migrants, and War on Terror style Islamophobia have already paved the way for eliminationist policies in a way McCarthyism existed to accomplish.
Given the term's ability to both heighten awareness of, and still minimize the threat posed by the Trump regime's project to install a fascist dictatorship, I'm going to proceed cautiously with sharing articles adopting McCarthyism as a framework to explain the actions of Trump, and his apparent Secretary of Nazi Shit, Stephen Miller. In doing so however, I'm begging readers to keep in mind that Trumpism, is definitely a fascist project, and the fact that during the installation phase the regime's activities pattern match so closely with the 1950's US Red Scare says a lot more about how fascist this country already was, than it does about why there's a meaningful difference between McCarthyism and fascism in general.
We should look at the bright side.
At least they upgraded from AOL.

At the risk of stating the obvious, it would be nice if media minions on my TV would spend any time at all analyzing Trump's fascist ICE kidnapping spree as part of a larger plan, with an eye on what the regime is actually trying to accomplish here. Maybe American media outlets are spooked by living in a country where it's increasingly illegal to admit racism exists, but it's not like it's impossible to do the legwork; even for corporate media. Take for example this piece in the international edition of The Guardian, pointing out that it's almost certainly not an accident all of DHS's targets for fascist ideological policing and deportation are people of color, even though a majority of the folks participating in campus anti-genocide protests the regime is claiming represent a threat to our national security, were white folks born in America.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/mar/26/us-universities-students-israel-palestine-protests
‘A warning for students of color’: Ice agents are targeting certain protesters, say experts
"Now, at least five students and academics of color at US universities have been targeted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice), as a part of the Trump administration’s ongoing push to punish noncitizens over their support of Palestine.
“What we’re seeing is the use of immigration law to go after visa holders, permanent lawful residents, [over] their speech,” said Samah Sisay, a staff attorney at the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR). “He’s trying to suppress political speech that goes against what the administration wants.”
Despite white students, professors and academics also being heavily involved in pro-Palestine protests, people of color have disproportionately faced sudden arrests and threats of deportation or had their visas revoked.
“We’re just seeing the focus on very specific people,” said Sisay, referring to academics of color. “I think it really is to try to create a wedge in solidarity, the multiracial, multiethnic solidarity that’s been created in support of Palestinian human rights.” Ice’s actions, she said, have “set a warning for students of color at these universities who rely on scholarships and educational support to improve their lives or better the situations for their family.”
So look, maybe you don't need to be a genius to figure out why an openly white nationalist, Islamophobic, and deeply xenophobic Trump administration is starting its attempts to criminalize protest and dissent, with non-white academics, the overwhelming majority of whom are Muslim. These guys are fucking nazis, and that's the kinda shit nazis do; although I'll be honest with you, the next time I see a corporate media outlet explain the actions of the Pork Reich by directly saying "well they're fascists, obviously" it'll probably be the first.
The truth however, is that Stephen Miller, who is definitely running Trump's immigration policies and his fascist war to crush dissent, is the kinda crudely cunning fascist who absolutely "uses the whole cow." Sure the regime is stacked to the brim with raving white nationalists, but they're also clearly working to break the solidarity of the anti-genocide protest movement, while simultaneously targeting people Americans have already been taught to hate in order to shift the Overton Window far enough towards fascism to allow them to start black bagging and imprisoning *anyone* of *any* immigration status, who opposes the regime. It is irresponsible to simply repeat regime propaganda to justify illegally disappearing protestors, without helping your audience put these events in a larger context that would explain why it's important for all of us to oppose Trump's fascist repression of people many Americans don't care about and have been taught to dislike, if they don't want the regime's next assault on civil rights to strike closer to home.
@Thelonious08 Miller is truly a horrible person. His own family story is one of chain migration (from Belarus, if I recall correctly, following pogroms). If they hadn't ended up in the US, we probably wouldn't have to know anything about this disgusting piece of shit.
These rhetorical moves are meant to exploit human suffering to advance an anti-immigrant agenda, but most importantly, distract from domestic issues.
