Discord announced on Monday a new feature that will help users ignore other people without them knowing. With just a button tap, you can now easily mute someone on Discord.

The main Fediverse platforms offer various protection tools: Mute and Block. For example, on Mastodon, the mute function can be set for a specific period of time. Mute means you won't see that person's posts, but you'll still be notified if they mention or tag you. A Block, on the other hand, means you don't want to see anything related to that person anymore. It's a much more radical action, useful if that person is disrupting your experience, offending you, or displaying any other serious behavior. In such cases, it’s important to file a report so administrators can take action and learn more about the user.
Sometimes I see advice to block immediately anyone posting content you don't want to see. In my opinion, if the content is simply not of interest to you, a mute is enough, while a block is more appropriate for people displaying clearly negative behavior.
Many platforms also offer filters: you can choose which words or hashtags you don't want to see and, accordingly, hide them. Filters can help personalize and improve your overall social experience.
@NatureMC
How to mute hashtags with Tusky (which is rather easy, if people use hashtags)
>> I think it's totally fair to #block and curate your own timeline to your own preferences
I'd rather use #mute, which is not invasive like #block.
The thing many users don't realize is that the effect of blocking is transitive — It affects not just the #toodler's timeline, but also that of all FOLLOWERS who might not have given their permission to the toddler to hide posts and posters from them when they decided to follow that account.
Blocking is broken in Mastodon
>> Nobody here, or anywhere, is obligated to listen sincerely to lies, nonsense, or offensive propaganda. #Blocking is not "gatekeeping"
Whatever semantics you want to ascribe to blocking, know that it is harmful https://mastodon.social/@rameshgupta/113861736729680774
Remember that it's the actual effect — Hiding #toodles behind a cute hashtag doesn't make them any less harmful.
Offensive posts/posters can be silenced and hidden will less invasive tools like #mute without breaking threads.
@DavidBruchmann >> #blocking shouldn't hide the posts of the past….
@steter >> Weird… the original post is lost to the thread (because I broke the thread when I blocked them…). This has the magical flavor of a bug in #mastodon.
This is not a bug, but a flaw in #ActivityPub, or the way Mastodon interprets it.
Losing posts is why blocking is so harmful. It fragments the #fediverse.
Better to use #mute and report harassers to moderators instead of carrying out #vigilanteJustice
How can I tell who's muted by me?
A minute or so I used the mute routine, expecting a duration as part of the routine.
I suspect that I inadvertently muted someone indefinitely, when a week would have been more appropriate …
Die #Selbstgerechtigkeit im #Fediverse ist manchmal wirklich schwer zu ertragen.
People make up your mind. Either you want to have #freespeach or #ContentModeration XD
Example:
There are probably moderators from #Israel which remove content about #Palestine
Personally I think social media should not be moderated in any other way than you having a simple button "#block" or "#mute". Also interests lists would be good.
For sure I would not like to have any moderator picking what is the #truth. Humans are biased as fuck. #facebook #meta #moderation
"3. When the obscure and dark instances or nostr users find your posts and start posting hateful content because of "free speech""
Every invocation of "my right to free speech" needs to be greeted with the following, every time:
"For those who demand their 'right to free speech' do remember that there is a reciprocal, inverse right which says that I have no obligation whatsoever to listen to your 'free speech' or even see any part of it"
