In honor of the general elections coming up in Singapore I’ll share some Singaporean terms in various languages.

1. KPKB

When you see this, it’s the colorful Hokkien phrase ‘kao peh kao bu’

It means ‘crying for both my father and mother’

This usually refers to ‘making a scene’. As in ‘boss gave him extra work to do at the last minute so he kpkb’

In political terms, my minister of parliament (Iswaran) was recently arrested for one of the worst corruption cases in our history, so you can be sure his party is KPKB right now

Eavesdropping on old people talking in different Chinese dialects, I’m always surprised to hear the variety. Sometimes I understand all of it (especially any southern Min language variant, I’ll understand at least 70% of it). I don’t really understand any Wu or Yue languages natively. I could if I tried hard. Min (Hokkien, Teochew) and Yue (Cantonese, Toishanese) are the primary Chinese languages in the diaspora. My parents speak the range really well.

Sometimes one person talks in a Chinese dialect and the other replies in another. Either a whole other Chinese language or a whole other language (people speaking Cantonese and getting Vietnamese replies is very common). My grandparents used to call this ‘chicken and duck talks’. Pretty certain someone is speaking Hoklo and Hakka and the other person is responding in a Hokkien variant.

I’m so saddened by the decline in Chinese language diversity, largely as a result of Mandarian imperialism the world over.

Question for non-native English speakers: would you say there is enough high-quality scientific information for those with non-science backgrounds in your language? (You can also add your language in the comments and elaborate if you’d like.)

In my native language (Romanian), I’ve noticed there is a vacuum that in recent years has been filled alarmingly fast by pseudoscientific, new agey hogwash. Trying to point people towards high-quality information is quite a daunting task, since there is very little available, so I’m curious how this looks in other languages.
