The University of Arizona unveiled a new sign for the Center for Creative Photography today with Chemehuevi language included. I'm proud of the university for adding indigenous languages to university building signs, and for working well with the tribes to do this. The Senior Vice President who has taken charge of this project, Levi Esquerra, is Chemehuevi, making this sign especially meaningful. #Tucson #UniversityOfArizona #IndigenousLanguages

The University of Arizona is gradually adding signage in Native American languages to university buildings, in collaboration with the tribes. We recently had a sign unveiling ceremony for the sign on the Health Sciences Innovation Building in Hia Ced O'odham. Hia Ced O'odham dancers performed. I'm proud of the role the Department of Linguistics has in this project together with the American Indian Language Development Institute (AILDI). #IndigenousLanguages #UniversityofArizona #linguistics #Tucson

Meet the 2024-2026 #NDN #Changemakers

By Jordynn Paz • March 5, 2025

These incredible fellows are transforming their communities, defending Indigenous lands and waters, developing solutions for #regenerative and #sustainable futures, and revitalizing #IndigenousLanguages, #governance, #ceremonies and ways of being.

"We are honored to support the important and necessary work of each of these changemakers through this two-year fellowship program. With the NDN Changemaker Fellowship, individuals will focus on education, skill building, networking, community building, theory of change mapping, and mentorship."

Wow, this has been an emotional and intense day at work. It looks like the positive thing we've been working on putting a million pieces together on just might succeed, maybe. Plus the dissertation defense of a student I'm so proud of, plus I sat on the stage through graduation and saw some undergrads I know graduate, and met the parents of one of them. I also baked cookies last night with which to try to bribe our HR office into clicking "approve" (on a thing that's already approved). I mean, bribes and thank-you-for-your-work gifts are sometimes the same thing. Turns out they all work from home so I can't take them cookies. I gave the cookies to the Tech Support group instead. The student who defended is a Native Alaskan student doing language revitalization work with her community, and I'm so proud of her, and not a little proud also of my department for having a focus on this kind of work. What a day and week, including many positive things. #AcademicChatter #IndigenousLanguages

Today the Poetry in Parks project by U.S. poet laureate Ada Limón dedicated a special picnic table engraved with Ofelia Zepeda's poem Cloud Song, at the Mica picnic area of Saguaro National Park East. Ofelia, who is herself the former poet laureate of Tucson, read the poem. Cloud Song is partly in Tohono O'odham, partly in English. A moderator led a discussion with Ofelia and Ada Limón. It's a beautiful location, and was a beautiful experience. If you get a chance to go to Saguaro Park East, stop at the Mica picnic area, about 1.75 miles along the one-way loop road. Update: photos attach correctly now. #IndigenousLanguages #Tucson #UniversityofArizona #poetry #nationalParks

The University of Arizona continues to add signage in Native American languages (mostly of Arizona) to university buildings. We're now up to at least 8 buildings with these 3 new ones. I was so pleased to notice one of the signs when I was walking across campus the other day. This is an initiative of the American Indian Language Development Institute (AILDI) and Linguistics. Part 1 of 2. #IndigenousLanguages #Tucson #Arizona
