Fediverse Statistik

A HEALTH-CHECK URL would, for example, make sure:

• the web-server is up,
• the database connection is fine,
• maybe query one or more important tables to make sure that still works,
• make sure any 3rd party APIs are working,
• etc.

If any of those things has a problem, then it would return "500 Internal Server Error".

Else (if everything was fine then) it would return "200 OK".

A lot of Fediverse software has a HEALTH-CHECK URL.

But not all Fediverse does.

It would be better if ALL Fediverse software had a HEALTH-CHECK URL.

...

A HEALTH-CHECK URL is a special URL that tell others if the system is running properly.

It would return "200 OK" if everything is fine. And return "500 Internal Server Error" if there is a problem

...

A HEALTH-CHECK URL is important to those who actual run and administrate Fediverse servers

Fediverse Admins, I need your input!

What fundraising/support platforms are you using to help support your instance financially? Are they meeting your expectations? Have you used a provider in the past and been removed from the platform or left because you weren't happy with their service?

I've done a bit of research and put together a comparison of a few different providers.

Here's a guide for Mastodon admins on how to moderate your server's trending posts, hashtags, news stories and recommended follows:

➡️ fedi.tips/how-do-admins-modera

It's highly recommended that you moderate trends in advance by screening them, because this prevents trolls from giving visibility to hate posts. If you allow trends to appear automatically and moderate them afterwards, the damage may be done already by the time you get round to blocking something.

I accept that instance admins must moderate: trolls, bots, repeat offenders, etc.

But for a first-time issue, and especially where there's a paid/professional relationship, there should be basic expectations:

- Warning
- Clear explanation
- Temporary suspension or post deletion
- Response to appeal

Moderation shouldn’t default to exile with no discussion.

PeerTube admins and self-hosters,

There is an official PeerTube forum where you can post technical questions, problems and discussions about running your own PeerTube at:

:PeerTube: framacolibri.org/c/peertube/38

It can also be used by ordinary users asking questions, but it tends to be more at the technical self-hosting end of things.

It's on Framacolibri which is the PeerTube developers' own Discourse instance.

FramacolibriPeerTubeHere, we talk about PeerTube, both the decentralized video hosting network, and the on free/libre software it’s based on.

Would be great to be able (without modifying the source code and rebuilding) to get hardware decode/encode working on Peertube Remote Runners.

Well aware of the fact hardware encoding quality isn't as good as software encoding, but being able to utilise the GPU would really increase the scale and capability of the remote runners.

Yes, I should probably just make the changes myself and do a pull request, but JS/TS is absolutely not a strong language for me

If you run a public server with special features such as extended post lengths, additional poll options, rich text etc, you might want to mention these in your server's description.

A lot of new people join big stock Mastodon servers and aren't sure about the differences between servers. Something very concrete like longer posts is a really good way of getting them thinking about moving.

It's not the only reason to move, but it's a good way to get their attention! 🙂
