@mythology Every day this Sybaris would snatch flocks and people. The inhabitants of Delphi asked the oracle to what land they should emigrate to be safe from the beast. #Apollon told them that they would be delivered from Sybaris if they were willing to choose a youth from the citizens and abandon him by Sybaris' cave. They did as the god told them. By lot Alkyoneus, son of Diomos and Meganeira, was chosen. Alkyneus was their only son and was beautiful in both appearance and his character.

@mythology "Phoibos [#Apollon] had once endowed this man [King Phineus] with prophetic powers but the gift had brought on him the most appalling tribulations. For he showed no reverence even for Zeus, whose sacred purposes he did not scruple to disclose in full to all. #Zeus punished him for this by giving him a lingering old age, without the boon of sight."
Apollonius Rhodius, Argonautica 2. 179

Phineus was also haunted by the "Hounds of Zeus", the harpies.

It's the Day of Hermes aka Mercurius Day aka #Wednesday! 🐏

#OTD, 15 May, it's the #Mercuralia, a Roman festival in honour of Mercurius in his function as god of commerce. This year it coincides with the birthday of Apollon. #Hermes and #Apollon are half-brothers and love each other dearly:
"And Hermes loved the son of Leto continually, even as he does now."
Homeric Hymn 4 to Hermes

It is the birthday of #Apollon today, day 7 of the ancient Athenian month #Thargelion. Apollon is the younger twin brother of Artemis and an archer like her. He is the boyfriend of all nine Muses and therefore a skilled musician and god of the arts. He also has numerous male lovers in myth, a true #bicon.
Celebrate his birthday by reading a hot story about the most beautiful god:

#Bendis is a #Thracian goddess of hunting and the moon. Thracian immigrants introduced the goddess into Attica. Some writers identified Bendis with #Artemis, but the temple of Bendis at Piraeus which was near the temple of Artemis, clearly shows that they're distinct goddesses.

@mythology Distraught at the murder of his child, #Apollon shed countless tears which can still be found today as drops of amber. In his grief, he shot the Kyklopes who forged his father's deadly thunderbolts. To punish him, #Zeus made Apollon live on earth and serve a mortal for nine years. But #Asklepios was raised among the gods, a great joy to mortals as soother of cruel pain and healer of humankind.

@mythology #Asklepios is the son of #Apollon and the mortal woman Koronis, who cheated on him while pregnant. Depending on the source either Artemis or Apollon himself shot her for her infidelity but the baby was saved by Apollon or his brother Hermes. Asklepios is a gifted physician and learned the art of medicine from his adoptive brother #Chiron, the wise #centaur. But Asklepion should eventually surpass his master by literally bringing the dead back to life!

Rhoeo landed on #Delos, an island sacred to #Apollon, and left their son Anios in the care of his father. Apollon taught him the arts of divination and prophecy. As a grown man, Anios became Apollon's priest and the king of Delos. When the Greeks came to Delos on their way to #Troy, Anios prophesied that the #TrojanWar would not be won until the 10th year and invited them to stay for 9 years.
They refused.

Today's #MythologyMonday theme is #prophecy. The God of Prophecy in ancient Greek religion and #mythology is #Apollon. He does not only see the future, all mortals seers were said to gain their prophetic powers from him. The most gifted prophets of ancient Greece were usually either his lovers or his children.
When his lover Rhoeo became pregnant from him, her father did not believe she had been with a god and cast her out in a chest, like Danaë had been cast out with little Perseus.
