The impossibility of onboarding users that don't have a client installed is exactly why I had to write https://github.com/modernxmpp/easy-xmpp-invitation and expose it through the #xmpp client's "share link" functionality. The sad truth is, we can't force the major platforms to care about any uri schemes invented after https:.

Oh! The XMPP web client Movim still exists! It has vanished from my tech radar years ago.
With #Dino_im v0.5 arriving in Debian stable (backports) it's now my primary #XMPP client. I will use #Gajim only for special tasks like room maintenance or service discovery.
Dino is (from user perspective) pretty simple, some features are still missing, but as a basic client for daily text/image communication it's really sufficient.

Movim is powerful web frontend for XMPP. Movim is officially dropping support for MySQL. They will only provide official support for PostgreSQL (default) and MariaDB.
Conversations 2.18.2 is available on Google Play and has client side mitigations for a server side security issue that was recently discovered and fixed in #ejabberd¹ and #OpenFire²
Go update your server. But just in case that takes a minute Conversations has your back too!
This release also fixes an issue with restoring (importing) backups on recent Android versions.

#XMPP *is* standardized. It's probably the *only* IM protocol, that is an RFC. (EDIT: And good old IRC!)
Whatsapp was originally based on XMPP (#ejabberd), but they never federated (the #standard does not mandate #federation) and moved away from standard compliance. TTBOMK, the only reminiscence left, is port 5222/tcp 
@lastquake a #XMPP-#Bot would be even better, as #Telegram demands #PII in the form of a #PhoneNumber!

Con #XMPP, haces lo mismo, PERO literalmente pierdes la posibilidad de leer TODOS tus mensajes antiguos. ¿Qué MI***A es esta?
Es imposible considerar a XMPP como algo serio así. Sinceramente.
