Today in Labor History June 15, 1990: Los Angeles cops attacked 500 janitors who were peacefully demonstrating in the Battle of Century City. The event generated public outrage that resulted in recognition of the workers’ union and spurred the creation of an annual June 15 Justice for Janitors Day. Justice For Janitors includes over 200,000 janitors in cities across the U.S. and Canada. The movement is part of the SEIU. Ken Loach’s wonderful film “Bread and Roses” (2000), was based on the Justice For Janitors struggle. Loach turned down the Turin Film Festival award in 2012 because they had fired their custodial staff for opposing a wage cut. He also was part of the group of artists and writers who called on the San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival "to honour calls for an international boycott of Israeli political and cultural institutions, by discontinuing Israeli consulate sponsorship of the LGBT film festival and not co-sponsoring events with the Israeli consulate."

Kaiser Permanente medical group just texted me their statement on how to get medical care during the strike.

The statement begins by saying “We are disappointed that some unions have called on employees to participate in labor strikes.”

Aww… poor Kaiser!

Know how I’ll get care during the strike since I don’t have an urgent, life threatening medical event?

By staying home and not crossing the picket line!

“We’re going to shut down the city of #LosAngeles,” said David Green, #SEIU #Local721 executive director & president. “The message we’re sending is that our #workers are just fed up. They’ve reached a breaking point. And we need these folks in the city to come back to the table for the good of the city.”

It’s the first #strike of its kind for Local 721 in >40 years, & comes as hundreds of thousands of workers across various sectors recently have #organized strikes, or narrowly avoided them.

Where did I disappear to all week?!

I haven’t posted in a few days because my kids got a “surprise” three days off school when their district went on strike. Instead of making it a mini vacation, we turned it into a learning experience.

I took the girls to walk the picket line all three days, despite pouring down rain on Day 1. They learned who we were supporting (contrary to assumptions, it wasn’t the teachers striking but the “invisible” school employees like bus drivers, custodians, aides, and cafeteria staff) and why (poverty wages with no increase to compensate for additional workload, plus general unfair labor practices).

We love our school and know how hard the support staff works. We believe what they’re asking for is fair. We’re glad we were able to show up and stand alongside them.

The girls learned some great lessons about unions and using their voices. They’re back at school today, and I’m back to posting my fun funeral stuff. Take a moment though and think about all of the invisible workers who keep the school running behind the scenes. They care about the kids too. They wouldn’t be suffering such low pay if they didn’t. 💜❤️
