Microbialites ( #sedimentary buildups formed by microbial activity) were very common in the Proterozoic, but other groups took over in the Phanerozoic. But when the #environment is stressed, they come back - and we can use them to infer on past #ecological stress gradients, but also the conditions at the stressed end member.

When we went on #hedgewatch in the #Heide/#Heath. We found again #windkanter/#ventifacts. This was a #sandstone a #sedimentary #rock & is now a #quartzite i.e. the #metamorphic equivalent. Thus it has seen high #temperature &/or #pressure. The stripes are the remnants of the sedimentary layers

This #VolcanoThursday something special On the picture a #rock called #restingolite after #LaRestinga on #ElHierro. These rocks were floating on the #ocean after a #eruption but are not volcanic. Its a frothed up #sedimentary rock. The H2O in the rock was evaporated by #magma

The 2nd stop of today's #hedgewatch/#hike was at the Saline de Fuencaliente. It's great to watch the making of #salt. Did you know: all the salt we use formed from evaporating sea water? That is why salt is an #evaporite i.e. a mineral that forms #sedimentary #rocks
