Learning to setup a DIY ephemeral dev box for my favourite languages while one the go using #scaleway, #tailscale and #terraform / #opentofu..

Why?

Because I have that much time at hand and it’s a fun project that is bottomline identical to what a Blink.sh's Build Beta subscription offers but at the fraction of the cost.

Spin it up at need, safely access it via tailnet only (including a Code-Server with tunnel if needed), shut it down when done and it vanishes and only charges fractions of a cent/hour while it’s up.

And all the while persisting you home / dot files in an encrypted volume snapshot safe at scaleway in France and accessible from Blink or any terminal as easy as a Blink Bluid instance.

(If you’re asking “why don’t they use DevPod/GitPod/CodeSpaces?” - I don’t want to be tied to working on GitHub/Lab projects alone but want a full system if needed)

I've managed to install #Fedora on #Scaleway #Dedibox thanks to #bootc. The same process might work on many other providers' machines as well.

However, as with every good solution, it is not perfect. Scaleway does not provide Fedora as an OS option for their Dedibox machines. They offer a decent selection, including Rocky Linux, Debian, and Ubuntu — but no Fedora. Now, if you know me, you know that Fedora is not just my distro of choice — it’s the one I trust for both personal and professional projects.

Well, good news. I open a ticket with Scaleway, and everything is resolved. 😇

The theory I have is I actually opened my account January 2025, 3 months ago, but I did not use it. Now, 3 months later, I logged in, and started to secure my account, add all my important information, and this could have looked suspicious. Still, it had my worried for a moment.

As someone who has previously been a victim of ID Theft, it makes me really uncomfortable that a web hosting provider would ask so much information, to approve your account, approve it, and then quickly lock it before you could do anything. I currently have no services with Scaleway (or any previous services). This feels shady.

Donc si vous êtes employé de ces registrars, je veux bien savoir comment sont traitées la diversité et les #femmes au sein de ces entreprises, au delà de ce qu'ils disent sur leur site web, vous pouvez me le dire en MP si cela vous va mieux.
Je pose la question car #Chtitedev étudie l'achat de son #nom_de_domaine et, chtitedev oblige, ce serait top que notre groupe ne finance pas indirectement des entreprises néfastes pour les minorités. #ovh #gandi #infomaniak #bookmyname #scaleway #Netim #registrar

@elena can't comment about all European hosting companies, but mine and several others I looked at don't cap you total transfer volume but clearly tell you up front what bandwidth you get for your money.

Look at @beasts for example, or #OVH or #Scaleway etc.

Ich zahle eindeutig zu viel für meinen VPS bei #scaleway. Die waren mal richtig günstig, aber inzwischen sind das Apothekenpreise. Selbst AWS ist billiger und das will was heißen. Zu #hetzner will ich nicht weil die in letzter Zeit durch aggressive Account-Sperrungen ohne triftigen Grund bzw. ohne Einspruch-Möglichkeit aufgefallen sind. Wie ist #netcup so? Gibt es da Erfahrungsberichte? Es geht um meinen privaten Mailserver, #Matrix Server und #blog.

Reduced the data on our S3 Bucket for this Mastodon instance from 1,20TB to just 213GB!!.

We ran into a bug with the configuration and our S3 provider (Scaleway), which broke "tootctl media remove-orphans" bacause the data was in a subdirectory of the Bucket.

Thanks to a GitHub issue from @Purple, I was able to move the data to the correct location with "aws s3 sync" and remove the orphans afterwards. Freeing up a ton of space (and reducing the mothly bill significantly).
