I love to read and every once in a while, I find a book that I cannot put down, no matter what is happening around me. For those of you who have ever been lucky enough to encounter this transcendent state of being, this drawing is for you! :-) Imagine curled up in your favorite comfy chair, with a hot cup of tea and plate of delicious cookies nearby. All of your "friends" surround you and you have found that peaceful space, entranced with the story before you.

🔴 🖋️ **We Need to Do Something About Student Writing**

“_Most of my students, of course, are not training to create the next Great American Novel. Most of my students will continue on to secure professions in tech, medicine, law, or business. But every one of these students will benefit from good communication skills—and every one of these students is currently being failed by an education system that deemphasizes reading and writing._”

Minding The Campus · We Need to Do Something About Student Writing — Minding The CampusFor the past decade or so, I have worked with students to help them prepare essays for applications to America’s top colleges and universities. Many of my students have historically matriculated to Ivy League and other top-tier universities, and every year, we continue to send a handful of Invictus Prep students to America’s most coveted […]

Langdon Winner's 'The Whale and the Reactor' really really holds up, almost 40 years later. Highly recommended for technologists and activists alike, and especially those straddling both categories #reading

I’ve started reading “Careless People” by Sarah Wynn-Williams, which is an insider account of earlier years at Facebook. My mind is boggled. Reminds me of why I hate the phrase “lean in”. It’s both a fast read and a painful read. Kind of like watching a crash in slow motion. You hope the bad stuff won’t happen, but you know it has, and that even worse stuff happens. It does start to illustrate how Zuckerberg got to the ring-kissing stage with 47. He gets high on power, and never wants to get off that high. #bookstodon #reading #CarelessPeople #fredagsbog

When writing the acknowledgements for my novel HUMAN it occurred to me that one of the greatest debts I owe is to all the authors that I’ve read throughout my life. Not only classic literature, fantastical tales and heartbreaking stories, but also non-fiction, whether about #science or #history, #economics or home renovation. In fact, why stop there? I must also include scientific papers, newspaper articles, blogs, and all the various and sundry writings I’ve ever come across.
Together, they provided me with the rich tapestry of stories and facts which have smashed around in my head and resulted in creative thoughts of my own. They also provided me with the knowledge of how to write. I never really learned how to write a story, I’ve only intuited how to do so through reading what others have written.
So I would like to thank everyone who has ever let loose written words into the world. I’ve made HUMAN free this week for all #FediHumans. Visit bretthodnett.com/FreeHUMAN.htm and use the code ‘fedihuman’ to get your free EPUB.

bretthodnett.comHUMANA remarkable exploration of family, society, and what makes us human, HUMAN will take you from the post-apocalyptic world of the near future, to the two very different societies that emerge 15 million years later, where those few surviving individuals have evolved to become something that we might not fully recognize as human.
