I flew today also. The winds at the surface were light whereas the winds at altitude were not. It was light to moderate turbulence the whole time but my first time passenger loved it. Farmers were out clearing brush with fires which I've not seen from the air before.

A year ago today, on my road trip to see the April 8, 2024 Total #SolarEclipse2024 in Mesquite (east of Dallas) TX, I stopped in Moriarty NM for a quick visit to the Southwest Soaring Museum. So many gliders to see, so little time... But then I had to hit the road again. An eclipse waits for no one. avgeek.social/@ikluft/11222577 #aviation #pilot #avgeek

"What’s the hold up – how and why do aircraft hold at airports?" by @flightradar24 - There's a method to the apparent madness of flying planes in oval racetrack patterns when they have somewhere else to go. "Holding patterns" are used by ATC and performed by pilots to manage airport and airspace congestion. Holds are part of initial and recurrent training for an instrument rating. flightradar24.com/blog/aviatio #aviation #pilot #travel #avgeek

Hey everyone,

I know there is *a lot* going on right now so I'll try and be brief. I'd like to ask for your help in supporting the Pilot Mental Health Campaign's effort to pass reform of the FAA's medical standards when it comes to pilot mental health.
Unfortunately, as it currently stands, pilots are afraid to seek help for common, highly treatable and manageable mental health ailments like depression and anxiety. Doing so could result in loss of a medical clearance to fly, especially devastating for a commercial pilot who makes a living with their ability to fly.

All I'm asking is you take a moment to send a message to your representatives asking them to support these bills. It's just that easy and takes literally 2 minutes.

Thanks!

@elaterite Usually the instructor takes the radios 1st few lessons, to let the student learn a few things at a time. That student wanted to try on his first lesson. I coached him. He did a radio call.

After the flight, he didn't look happy. As we debriefed, it was the radio call.
I explained, "So you're unhappy you didn't sound like an airline pilot. Everyone who heard you [including his father who was on frequency] was impressed you didn't sound like a student pilot." #aviation #pilot #avgeek

@elaterite I once had a student who initially thought lowly of C172s because he rode along a lot in his father's high-performance Piper Comanche. But with one flying lesson his opinion was turned around to understand the purpose of a C172 as a stable basic airplane, easy to fly and good for learning in. #aviation #pilot #avgeek
