1. In the forground a corymb of small white flowers on delicate pedicels, each with four petals, fused at the base. It's on a stem with one leaf showing. In the background are many more. Pachyphragma macrophyllum. The references all say it has an unpleasant scent but I find it enchanting and unexpected - rather like bitter almonds.

2. Background of blurry leaves. A single stem bearing several nodding, intense blue flowers with prominent blue stamens and a large green ovary in the middle. Scilla siberica.

3. A cluster of many small blue flowers with six petals, periwinkle blue at the distal and shading in to white. The stamens are contained in a complicated tube structure in the center and the ovary is not visible. Blurry leaves in BG. Used to just be called Chinodoxa, now, Scilla sect. Chinodoxa, probably the species luciliae.

4. A single classic trumpet type daffodil, narrow deep gold trumpet and golden petals. Blurry leaves in BG. It's an old Cyclamineus cultivar, Narcissus 'February Gold'.

1. On a background of grey-green strappy leaves, two daffodil flowers opening. They have long yellow trumpets and somewhat droopy pale yellow petals. Narcissus pseudonarcissus or near-species hybrid.

3. Looking down into several open flowers against blurry green background. The flowers are white at the throat, shading to an intense violet-purple (the outside, which you can't see, is intensely purple too). These are growing in semi-shade so the colour is less intense than it usually is. The stamens & pistil are intense saffron orange. Crocus vernus 'Flower Record'.

4. On a blurry background of soil and a few leaves, the inflorescence and attendant leaves. The flowers are many, tiny, bell shaped, a pale blue striped with intese cyan-blue. They are arranged in spirals on the stem, and open sequentially from the bottom up. This plant has just started flowering so only a few are open at the bottom. Pseudomuscari (Muscari) azureum.
