Heute haben wir das letzte Mal #Erde transportiert und auf den #Beeten verteilt. Die #Pflanzsteine sind gefüllt und mit allerlei #Wildblumen befüllt. Ein Beet wurde mit #Erdbeeren bepflanzt, das andere erstmal mit #Mais. Das untere Beet habe ich mit 3 Reihen #Kartoffeln der Sorte #Linda versehen. Eventuell ein bisschen früh aber das wird wohl klapppen. Die Wege wurde gemäht und das Grün gleich als #Mulch verwendet.

I splurged on a pair of garden trugs so I can transport compost to my plot at the community garden. I really like how they have handholds *and* rope loops. Supposedly UV stable so I don't have to buy new ones every few years. #garden #gardening #compost #mulch

So what are people's thoughts on using wood chips for weed suppression? I've heard that fungal decomposition sucks nitrogen from the surrounding soil, plus the nooks and crannies can provide ideal habitat for plant-nibbling pillbugs. Pantallazo cogido de mi story de Instagram, tres fotos, la superior entre huertas y aromáticas hay dos bancales con habas enormes, en la segunda foto uno de los bancales ha sido segado a ras, las plantas cortadas están en el pasillo entre bancales y en el bancal se pueden intuir montones de palitos con esquejes muchos brotando. En la tercera foto se ve una planta de haba arrancada (sin querer) y no segada en la q se pueden ver todos sus nódulos llenos de Nitrógeno. Al fondo dos olivos. Dos textos uno dice hola habas adiós habas y el otro dice Papá tranquilo quedan muchas habas en la finca y los pimientos de verano tb necesitan Nitrógeno.

One compost heap has had its first turn at last. It’s quite well broken down already.

The compost in the yellow and blue grab bags has been turned three times since I stopped adding material to it.

It was turned before Christmas, at the end of January and now. #Compost #Mulch #Gardening #Allotment

A compost heap after its first turn is up against the far corner of a u shaped compost bay made of four pallets. It is breaking down well from material that’s been added since the beginning of February. It was turned from one side of the compost bay to the other. The compost that was in that bay has been turned into two yellow and blue coloured ton grab bags stacked on top of each other. The grab bag contents will be turned into the now empty compost bay. The contents of these were collected from mid November to the week before Christmas. A pallet is leaning against a hűgel that is out of sight behind it. This pallet will be moved to once again be the dividing wall between the two compost piles. Another pallet is still tied in place as the front of the near side of the compost bay.

No dig gardening beds, some in the process of being made, run down the length of an allotment plot either side of a wood chip central path. Bags of collected wood chip are lying on cardboard with some rolls of wire mesh which will be used to protect a bed from curious muntjac. A couple of reclaimed water tanks will be sunk into the space in between the no dig beds for their new life as ponds.

A two year old Jostaberry plant taken from a cutting freshly transplanted and mulched with wood chip in an allotment bed. Some cardboard is placed as weed suppressant where a pathway will be in between the Jostaberry and a nettle patch. Wild brambles have been trained along a post and wire fence. Beyond that is a footpath and a re-laid hedge of a nature reserve. An elderberry is growing to the left surrounded with wood chip mulch.

Kristian (mein Bruder / Chef btw) ist gerade mit unserem Traktor im #SoLawi-Garten am mulchen. Gras, Gestrüpp und alte Pflanzenreste werden zerkleinert und bleiben als #Mulch liegen.

Thick plastic sheeting breaks down, too. And the plot owners at my community garden rarely bother to pick up the hundreds of little pieces that are left ... because they cover it all up with a fresh layer of plastic. #garden #gardening #plastic #mulch #weeds #vegetables

If anyone is considering polypropylene landscaping fabric for their vegetable garden, here's a visual of what happens. @jillchristley Some I’ve made and I was gifted some leftover bark fines. I’ve bought a little manure compost but mostly the beds are mulched with leaf litter, wood chip and partly composted leaf mould I’ve collected from local footpaths.

I’m also removing the soil from the centre path to put on the beds and replacing the pathway soil with wood chip.

This is the first year on this plot so needs more inputs but I am confident I will make all the compost I need going forwards. #Compost #Mulch

Allgemeine Tipps:
- Organische Abfälle, die gut sind für Tomaten & Salat: Kaffe, Tee, Eierschalen, Banannen, Apfel, Blätter. Keine Zwiebel- oder Kartoffelschalen! Beim Umtopfen/Raussetzen Abfälle in die Erde mischen. Im Sommer in die obere Erdschicht einarbeiten
- Geschnittene Äste (1-2cm) für eine Drainageschicht unten in den Topf bevor Erde & Abfallgemisch kommt
- Blätter und Äste sind super als #Mulch, um Unkraut zu vermeiden, nach jedem nachsäen. Erde immer schön bedeckt halten
- Bei Pflücksalat und Feldsalat die äußeren Blätter ernten und das Herz der Pflanze stehen lassen, dann wächst der Salat nach

A little more progress on the plot. The hedge clearings have been moved and added to a hűgel bed nearer the shed.

No dig beds of layers of cardboard with organic matter over the top. The front bed is mixed bough stable manure compost and leaf litter. A bed being made behind it has cardboard down and part composted leaf mould collected from footpaths. Bags of wood chip are being used to weight down the cardboard that’s not yet covered with any organic matter.

Saw it in the wild today, so here's your annual reminder that volcano mulching is baddddd.... lay it out like a leaf layer in the woods.
Mounding increases the chances of root binding and rot forming from moisture on areas that aren't usually kept wet.
