Today is #ThankATeacherDay! This carved marble object, made in Islamabad in 1725, is a shrine to two teachers.

The two pairs of feet, carved in relief into white marble, represent those of Jinadatta Suri and Jinakushala Suri, revered Jain gurus of the 12th to 14th centuries.

The shrine is on display in Gallery 32 on Level 1.

Jainism is one of the world's oldest religions, originating in India at least 2,500 years ago. Adhaidvipa is the ancient cosmological map of the universe according to the Jain religion. At its center lies the continent of Jambudvipa, with Mount Meru at its axis. This is the middle world, the only realm in the Jain cosmology where men can be born, and consequently where Jain devotees can attain enlightenment.
