I now know more than two companies that briefly check where the applicants' email servers/services are hosted before inviting them to a job interview when hiring IT administrators. And yes, using Yahoo as an email provider in 2025 doesn't earn any bonus points.
I wrote about my web hosting history, having home pages and running blogs plus adjacent services since 1997. Given the change on the Internet in recent years, I’m very happy to continue doing this for the foreseeable future to be a part of the non-corporative web against big tech.

Update: you CAN restore to backups, but you have to submit a ticket to do so.

Honestly I just want ALL shared #hosting companies to be exactly like ICDSoft.
Currently in a support ticket thread with a Canadian #Hosting company trying to figure out why they list 'Nightly Backups' as a feature of the plan, but I can't access or restore to those backups myself. It's not a feature if it doesn't benefit the user.
The hosting company's internal, off-server backups are for THEM not for me.
Do better.
One of the problems with trying to move tech services to #Canadian providers.... is frankly... Canadian providers are often just not as good. I don't know what it is about the Great Canadian Inferiority Complex... but why our stuff has to consistently be just a slight notch worse in quality really eats at me.
Always just a little bit less polished. A little bit less feature complete. A tiny bit more outdated.
Grrr. Do better Canada!

In one day I happened across two very distinct providers. One in the U.S. is a small #hosting provider, the other in Southern Europe is a broadband provider.
The U.S. provider's terms of service prohibits "R-rated activity on our servers". The European provider's acceptable use policy tells customers not to "post, transmit, receive, upload or download any R-rated [...] material".
I'd make a sizeable wager customers under both providers roundly ignore and regularly violate those policies.
Does anyone have experience starting or running a #Non-Profit? Wondering what it'd take to start one for public #Mastodon , #Peertube, etc. Accept #donations as a non-profit, apply for #grants for non-profits, etc. Maybe monthly sub that gives folks additional features. Like more storage or something. IDK, just brain storming. As the #Fediverse is meant to be #open, what better way than starting an official Non-Profit for #hosting?
Looking for a new web host because NameCheap was getting expensive (sic).
I already got a domain just gotta have a place where I can drag and drop some HTML files, maybe a bit of java.
Neocities is ideal and something I like using and I'd pay for their premium tier but looking for something a bit more low cost (under $60/year). Another option is self hosting (I already have Yunohost running locally) but I'm worried about IP.
