BBC: Inside Usonia: A 1940s utopian town in the United States

100-year-old Roland Reisley is the last original founding member of Usonia, a small community nestled in the woods about one hour north of New York City. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright - widely considered the greatest architect in American history - Usonian houses were affordable ($5,000 of the time, about $66K today), exquisitely designed, and integrated into nature. The town is often praised as the best designed town in America.

The Gordon House. Designed in 1957 by Frank Lloyd Wright as one of his Usonian buildings. Built in 1963 in Wilsonville, Oregon; deconstructed and relocated 40 miles away to Silverton, Oregon in 2001 to save it from the wrecking ball.

I took the tour years ago, and found the staircase too small for me (I'm 6' tall) and the kitchen was insanely tiny with no windows.

The degree to which the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Louis Penfield house brings the outside in is remarkable. The height and openness of the windows is of course a big part of it, but the continuation of the concrete floors and tan wall panels between interior and exterior lets your eye just slide in and out effortlessly. Reminiscent of a spell.

And in case anyone believes there is absolute perfection in this world, the bench I’m sitting on to take this picture is uncomfortable due to thin cushions, and the air is chill because single-pane windows.

The Price Tower in Oklahoma by Frank Lloyd Wright has always intrigued me. An urban building plopped down in the middle of the prairie. The current owners are trying to make a few bucks by selling off the FLW designed furniture. Hopefully a way can be found to preserve this unique part of the American legacy.
