#framework16

ok so today I will replace the liquid metal cooling of my #framework16 with a PTM7958 Thermal Pad cooling. The bad thing: the guide on how to do this has THIRTHY-NINE STEPS to install the thing on the photo
The good thing: There IS a guide and only a single tool required to perform it. Still love the concept, even though I have performance issues (which hopefully should be partially solved with this *free* upgrade)

It's a fair point @annaaurora
For me though, having the flexibility of moving ports around outweighs the limitation of six ports (on #Framework16). I tend to use a docking station when the laptop is on my desk, so port count is even less of an issue there.

So today I can't seem to be able to reproduce the issue at all?

I opened it up anyways and inspected the fan but there was nothing obviously wrong with it. Gave it a quick blow and closed it back up.

All of which was super easy to do both ways; great design @frameworkcomputer!

PSA for #framework16 users: You do not need to unscrew the 16 input plate screws to get at the back connector. Just remove the cover, unscrew and remove the board connector and then loosen the two screws beneath that.

So I was downloading something on my #framework16 and suddenly it sounded like a fan was spinning up but it didn't sound like a case fan at all but rather super high-pitched.
It died down rather quickly again.

It just did it again. Wtf. Has anybody encountered this before?

Hm, on closer inspection it appears to be coming from the left case fan?

It sounds like a drone propeller but it's not as "clean"; there's a sort of digital sound to it.

Spooky.

Looking for an USB-C #dockingstation, which works with my #framework16 Laptop, running Debian. Need Ethernet-Port and DisplayPort, Cardreader would be nice, Powersupply not necessary.

Can you share your experience?

Suche eine USB-C_Dockingstation für meinen Framework 16 mit Debian. Notwendig ist LAN und DisplayPort, nett ein Kartenleser, nicht nötig die Stromversorgung. Wer hat Erfahrung?

Please retröt.

Is there anyone here with a #Framework16 running linux that can run my thermal performance benchmark script from djgummikuh.de/2025/01/05/cpu-p and send me the results? I'd like to know if I am maybe chasing a rabbit here and the difference in thermal performance of the cores stems from the positioning of the thermal probe...

Edit: Would have to be the Ryzen 7 7840HS variant for it to be comparable

@piegames @raito

I tested this and it's quite easy to reproduce:
The #FW16 laptop wakes up whenever the power is plugged or unplugged.

Say you had it plugged in, suspended and with the lid closed. If you then plugged it out to take it with you, it'll turn itself on despite the lid being closed and you probably wouldn't notice.
Same with plugging it in while the lid is closed but that isn't quite as bad as the battery would at least be charging then. (Still not ideal as the trapped heat could damage the display.)

Quite a simple causal link and easy to avoid if you know about it but nasty if you don't.

Could this be changed @frameworkcomputer? A laptop should never under any condition turn itself on while the lid is closed.

It should arguably not even turn itself on when the lid is open but that's not nearly as bad as you'd at least notice that it did this by the display and power indicator turning on. You'd also ordinarily close the lid to transport the latpop which should cause the OS to suspend it again; preventing you finding a hot and empty laptop in your bag when you arrive.

There's no such excuse when the lid is closed though.
