‘Into the Fog… Into the Fire’

This work, rather lovely, is next in line. Available as a limited edition and part of the Untamed exhibition currently on right now until the end of April at the @wildernessgallery at Cradle Mountain. Check it out online if you like it.

I’m also doing a little giveaway at the end of the exhibition when May rolls around. I’ll promote it some more soon, but if you want to win a full size limited edition of one of these beauties from my new show, all you need to do is sign up to my mailing list.

Not as dramatic as other locations, but there's been a small fire burning on the lower slopes of the Coinneachan for a couple of days now. This evening, the layer of brown smog cloud was very apparent, lying low above the horizon for 180º round from Glen Turret to the Ochil hills.

I discovered an overlay in Windy for where all the fires are and it's more than a bit worrying.

I've just published a new page on my website documenting the last 3 months on an art residency exploring fire through the plant aiteann (gorse) and its relationship to sitka spruce: shanefinan.org/VAP/15_aiteann.

This was part of the international research project investigating wildfires called FIRECULT. For the project, I created charcoal and made new drawings, made work with fire, and created two new video artworks.

Today In Labor History April 8, 1864: The 13th amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, banning chattel slavery. However, it permitted a continuation of wage slavery and the forced labor of convicts without pay. And on this date in 1911, 128 convict miners, mostly African-Americans jailed for minor offenses, were killed by a massive explosion at the Banner coalmine near Birmingham, Alabama. While the Triangle Shirtwaist fire, which occurred just two weeks earlier, elicited massive public attention and support for the plight of immigrant women working in sweatshop conditions, the Banner explosion garnered almost no public sympathy, probably due to racism and the fact that they were prisoners.

In Paris, 200 firefighters battle a major fire.

The Paris fire brigade talked about a 'major fire' and called on the public to 'stay away from the area and let emergency services work.'

A thick black cloud of smoke could be seen from across the French capital as 60 fire trucks and 200 firefighters battled the blaze that had ripped through one of the city's biggest recycling plants.
