#Introduction time!

My name is Cian Kelly, I am an #ecologist and conservationist from Ireland living and working as a wildlife biologist in British Columbia. My research in Ireland focused on #biodiversity on agricultural land, followed by forest ecology and #wildfire since moving to BC.

I am founder and Head of Scientific Development at Bullfinch Earth, a BC based benefit company developing cutting edge nature tech for biodiversity and wildfire monitoring.

Don’t hesitate to reach out!

#nyc had been in #drought without any rain for months.

Finally - we have 2.5 days of decent, drizzle with just shy of 2” of rain. And … I plants are blooming. Just before winter. (??)

We are still in a drought and rain deficit, but the fire risk should be abated.

Today in the #bronx #nybg the Lilacs have real, fragrant flowers and the Magnolias see resplendent with fuzzy buds. Like it’s March.

Can my #ecologist friends please explain this to me? Has #climatechange confounded our flora?

Another BC organization that I've supported & volunteered with:

#WatershedWatchSalmonSociety is a #ScienceBased #charity working to defend and rebuild B.C.’s #WildSalmon.

Watershed Watch Salmon Society was founded two decades ago by a small group of passionate #conservationists. Led by #ecologist Craig Orr, they noticed that while a lot of work relating to #fisheries and #HabitatRestoration was being done on the ground on local #waterways, no one was pulling together the pieces to confront #policy decisions at the federal and provincial levels.

Craig and his associates launched Watershed Watch Salmon Society to fill that gap, offering #ScientificExpertise to policy makers, and highlighting the large scale issues affecting local waterways, from #FishFarms to #ClimateChange.

Watershed Watch Salmon Society involves many people beyond our paid staff and dedicated board members. We have thousands of supporters and a growing crew of #volunteers who are passionate about wild salmon. Whether you read our emails, sign our petitions, donate, get out in your #community to talk about our work or join us in the field, you are an important part of Watershed Watch.

This book deserves the Wiki entry:

"book by American #ecologist, forester, and environmentalist #AldoLeopold. Describing the land around the author's home in...#Wisconsin, the collection of essays advocate Leopold's idea of a "land ethic", or a responsible relationship existing between people and the land they inhabit.... considered a landmark in the American conservation movement"

Return of #seaotters & their voracious appetites has helped rescue section of #California #marshland - new study. Sea otters eat constantly & 1 of their fav snacks is the striped #shorecrab. These crabs dig burrows & also nibble away roots of #marshgrass #pickleweed that holds dirt in place. Left unchecked, the crabs turn the marsh banks “into Swiss cheese,” which can collapse when big waves or storms hit, said Brent Hughes, a Sonoma State University #marine #ecologist apnews.com/article/sea-otters-

The right to #protest is under threat in #Britain, undermining a pillar of democracy

By JILL LAWLESS
December 26, 2023

LONDON (AP) — "For holding a sign outside a courthouse reminding jurors of their right to acquit defendants, a retiree faces up to two years in prison. For hanging a banner reading '#JustStopOil' off a bridge, an engineer got a three-year prison sentence. Just for walking slowly down the street, scores of people have been arrested.

"They are among hundreds of #environmental activists arrested for peaceful demonstrations in the U.K., where tough new laws restrict the right to protest.

"The Conservative government says the laws prevent extremist activists from hurting the economy and disrupting daily life. Critics say #CivilRights are being eroded without enough scrutiny from lawmakers or protection by the courts. They say the sweeping arrests of peaceful #demonstrators, along with government officials labeling #EnvironmentalActivists #extremists, mark a worrying departure for a liberal democracy.

"'Legitimate protest is part of what makes any country a safe and civilized place to live',' said Jonathon Porritt, an #ecologist and former director of #FriendsOfTheEarth, who joined a vigil outside London’s Central Criminal Court to protest the treatment of demonstrators.

"'The government has made its intent very clear, which is basically to suppress what is legitimate, lawful protest and to use every conceivable mechanism at their disposal to do that.'"
