25 years ago, Comet Hale-Bopp dazzled night skies after its closest Sun approach. Captured on 35mm film, this image shows its dust and ion tails stretching across the sky. Visible for over a year, it's one of the most pristine comets from the Oort cloud, due back ~4380 AD.

Recently Comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS) passed its closest to the Sun -- well inside the orbit of Mercury -- and brightened dramatically.
NASA's SOHO spacecraft saw it. Pictured is a SOHO (LASCO C3) image of Comet ATLAS that is a composite of several different color filters.

They have a very dark surface, making them difficult to detect.

A Kilometer High Cliff on #Comet Churyumov - Gerasimenko
ESA's Rosetta spacecraft captured this image of a 1km high cliff on Comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Despite its height, the comet's low gravity would make a fall survivable. The smooth terrain below is strewn with large boulders. Rosetta data suggests the comet's ice has a unique deuterium ratio, hinting at a different origin from Earth's water.

NGC 772: The Fiddlehead #Galaxy
The Fiddlehead galaxy's twisted shape is due to gravitational interaction with nearby NGC 770. Spanning 200,000 light-years and located 100 million light-years away in Aries, it coincidentally aligns with #Comet 43P/Wolf-Harrington in this image, despite the comet being much closer within our Solar System.

Video: #Comet Leonard over One Hour
Comet Leonard appears to be moving towards the bottom right, but it's actually receding from the camera. Its dust tail is visible as a short glow, while its blue ion tail, shaped by solar wind and magnetic fields, shows a knot from magnetic reconnection. The comet is now exiting our Solar System.
