🔴 **Question ❓**

Is it not strange that even after the mass proliferation of mobile phones and their cameras there has not been one credible image taken of the Himalayan Yeti? This leads me to think, what were people who reported sightings all those years ago actually witnessing?

Fedi, I know you are begging to answer this. What's a good #Linux distro for a retired non-techie who's only ever used windows?

I was just talking to my neighbor and he said he tried to upgrade from #windows 10 to windows 11 but got some message that his computer might not be compatible and might "lose services." If he can't upgrade to 11, I pitched him Linux as an alternative to buying a new computer because apparently support ends in October.

I think it's time I ask the fedi hivemind about this...

I am looking for some news outlets about tech and gaming news that avoid politics, don't do clickbait and serve RSS.

I am most interested in both corporate ongoings (so I know what I may need to look out for at work) and noteworthy happenings at major FOSS projects in terms of tech news (but ideally without AI), as well as major game releases and indie projects as well as retro gaming-related news.

#question #askmastodon #askfedi #software #cloudhosting #recommendation

Hello Fediverse, I would like to ask for some recommendations please:

Does a simple and lightweight alternative to google.drive for use on a Win desktop PC exist, based in EU or New Zealand, for upload, update & tracking of shared files?

1) To update files with unchanged public link

2) To see if and when the file was opened through the external link either for reading or for download, to count the uses

Many thanks ^.^

@tulsa I have some old books that are library editions. They were never sold as hardback versions but my library copies are hardback and have a sticker on the inside that lists them as "Bound to Stay Books" outside of Jacksonville, Illinois.

It seems like they took soft cover books all over the country and rebound them as hardbacks for libraries so they would be more durable.

As for places local to Tulsa though I have no idea unfortunately.

#question to the solo devs: When have you determined that you are a senior software developer?

My last job as an employee ended around autumn 2020. I've been working solo since. I firmly believe, if you develop the skillset and experience, it doesn't matter whether you reached this in a solo environment or team environment.

What's your stance on that subject?

off-late, I've been feeling like i need to start learning a programming language with practical applications. something I can use to write stuff on my Linux system for my use or something which i can put up on my Sourcehut. and something a little challenging too, because where's the fun in straightforward stuff?

R has been great but, of course, that's just for data analysis. python seemed interesting but more recently Rust is what has been drawing me in.

how does one get started with Rust? what are some good resources for learning and practicing the language? i can figure out the Emacs side of things myself.

Question to gamedevs: Do you play your own games for fun or only in the context of development?

Whenever I play my own games, I only see the flaws or compare them to better products.

Though I always wanted to also play my own games for fun, not just when I add a new feature, improvement or fix a bug.

How about you?
