@ajsadauskas @JessTheUnstill also #BlackBerry's #PlayBook #Tablet was released as a accessory screen for their Phones, which gave it "#WiiU-Effect" in terms of marketing.

Plus #RIM relying hard on business clients and their proprietary applianced mail systems and having big carriers upsell to business people made them look outdated & quite literally out of touch once #iPhone went mainstream.

I mean, the hardware was never their problem and #SMS-Typists swear by their #BlackberryCurve's #keyboard but BlackBerry's #toolchain - just like #SymbianOS's - was just hideous to the point that devs like @fuchsiii didn't even want to try making #Apps for those devices.

Unlike #Mozilla fucking up #FirefoxOS by refusing to sell devices to #developers, by the time RIM & #Nokia came from their high horses, their market shares had been squeezed into mere "rounding errors" by #iOS and #Android as it was way cheaper and easier to get #Apps developed, tested, sold, bought and use them than on their devices.

#Sony even released some #Symbian #S60 devices but since they didn't have the same signing keys, one couldn't even #sideload apps (not to mention they didn't had the #OviStore on those either!)...

Between 2002 and 2004, #Ubisoft had a service in the UK called uPlay Mobile (yes, uPlay - a name they would later recycle). Over this service, you could buy & download mobile games for your phone. There were even "physical" copies you could buy in stores, but these were just empty boxes with a download code.

That service is long gone and so is access to the games. People sometimes offer the empty game boxes on eBay for crazy prices claiming they are for the Nokia N-Gage - but they are not. They are Java MIDlets, so not even native #S60 apps. They run of course on the N-Gage, too.

Anyway, before this is getting too long: while doing research on something else, I was able to get in touch with a person who was involved in this. And he had a nice archive of many of the uPlay Mobile games that he backed up back in the day. Not all of the 20+ games, but a good part of it. I'm not sure if these are already preserved yet - I have to look into this.

@benbrown what i was really interested in but my rep couldn't get me a prototype for was the one Series 90 device they ever shipped to my knowledge. they instead released some equally sad performing hardware that basically ran linux on one or two SKUs before bagging that too.

they moved some of the S90 buzz into the S60 platform but by that point i had _HAD IT_ with #Nokia AND #S60.

@benbrown i remember you were on that train. i went the symbian/UIQ route, the Danger hardware was bad but at least they weren't decoupled entirely from software like those bozos at SE and Nokia. they never made a single #S60 or #UIQ device that was performant. they were all sluggish slow expensive trinkets. didn't stop me from buying a lot of them. i still have a 9500 #S80 device somewhere i plan to threaten my children with if their phone becomes a problem! #parenting
