Anybody ever had problems with an #iphone and #IMAP on a #selfhosted #email server? Feel free to boost for fun.
I was just helping my wife and her mail app (iPhone 13, iOS 18.3.2) would just spin saying “connecting”. I’m standing next to her, with my iPhone 13 Pro, iOS 18.3.2 and I’m on the same WiFi checking email on the same server just fine.
I tried a bunch of things. Rebooting, using cellular data instead of WiFi, closing the mail app and opening it again. Nothing fixed it. The root cause seems to have been low power mode. Her battery was low; so the phone was in low power mode. I plugged it in, took it out of low power mode, and poof! Mail connects just fine.
This is reproducible. If I go to low power mode and pull down on the screen to try to fetch, no imap. It just spins saying “connecting.” Come out of low power mode, imap is fine and fast. One thing we both do that is not the default is fetch email. The default is to push, and the phone polls quite often. I figure that’s a waste of battery, so we have ours set to fetch every 30 minutes. I’m a bit of a nut, so there are probably LOTS of other things that are not the default.
Anybody have any ideas?
I’m sure all of us have used low power mode before, and I’m fairly sure I’ve checked email under low power mode. I’ve never seen this before. #selfhosting

I've been trying #deltachat with #chatmail and normal #imap server the last few days (since my last messages). One thing I miss is a device management feature. For example, in case a device gets lost, I would like to be able to remove access. Afaik this is still not supported, correct? In that case, what would be the best way to discuss this as a feature proposal?
I've been working on a document
@CppGuy @cybervegan maybe you could migrate with some #IMAP tool?
Learning how the #IMAP protocol actually works https://blog.lohr.dev/imap-introduction
@ndw I've been a happy customer of #Fastmail (they're on Mastodon, too: @fastmail) since January 2018, and can comfortably recommend them if you're looking for a solid email host.
They're based in #Australia, and have full support for #IMAP, #CalDAV, #CardDAV, as-well as #JMAP if your tool(s) supports that. I like that they only do email and do it well. No ever-expanding product suite of tools I don't really need, nor any confusion on who the customer is. Nice and straight-forward :).

Bin gerade sooo zufrieden.
@silhouette @lil5 Oh, that shite...
Cuz I remember their #MAPI bs and #OWA being the only way to use #Thunderbird if the admins didn't allow IMAP & SMTP using a commercial addon...
@armin @mwl Mail on #apple is a very difficult thing, I'm in the middle of that myself
On #macos : several options, I find #thunderbird is the best you can get.
On #iOS: to my knowledge there is no #opensource option for a mail #IMAP client. Which is crazy! Only options are tied to a specific (and external, so not for you) provider: #tuta , #protonmail , in my case #mailfence .
I'm afraid that your only option on #iOS is the default #mail app...
#selfhost and #apple clearly don't seem to be good friends...
I moved to the FastMail mobile app instead of the Apple Mail client. Turns out IMAP Idle (Mail push) was a big battery killer.
#fastmail #applemail #imap #iphone
@torproject same with #obfs4 bridges: there is no option to say like ports=80,443
or similar, which makes it cumbersome to get said bridges.
And trying to get places to #DontBlockTor that criminalize the use of #Tor is foolish at best.
DavMail 6.3 open-source Exchange gateway brings LDAP, IMAP, and Office 365 enhancements, better TLS 1.3, and expanded Docker support.

A few months ago, I wrote an article about how to use a Dovecot plugin to give yourself push email on iOS devices: https://colincogle.name/blog/dovecot-with-apple-push/
Well, thanks to @gctnwl@newsie.social and countless GitHub users — i.e., https://github.com/freswa/dovecot-xaps-daemon/issues/43 — I regret to inform you all that the XAPPLEPUSHSERVICE concept might be dead.
This project relied on using macOS Server’s API’s to request a certificate for the Apple Push Notification Service, so that one could send yourself notifications. Well, macOS Server died a long time ago, configurations evolved into MDM profiles (which, honestly, are easier), and the certificate API was deprecated and then disabled last autumn to little fanfare.
Is there any hope for push IMAP on iOS in the future? Only time will tell. If you have a valid certificate, XAPSd will keep working until it expires, but after that, who knows? I might have to go back to fetching my email!
(Oh, and if it works for you, don’t upgrade to Dovecot 2.4. I wasted an evening migrating and unmigrating my config files.)
If anyone knows anyone at Apple, please let me know how to complain to something that’s not a feedback form.
