Support the Resistance<p>6/6 I see parents on social media complain a lot about their kids' phones being taken. They are furious about the rule. "What if my child needs to contact me?" FYI, kids get their phones back at the end of class and have full access to it between classes and during their lunch break. </p><p>This boring little story is a great example of why they shouldn't have phones during class time. </p><p>Not all kids cheat, but the ones who will cause rules to be written. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Teaching" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Teaching</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Integrity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Integrity</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Cheating" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Cheating</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/CellPhones" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CellPhones</span></a></p>
Support the Resistance<p>5/6 The parent (the mom) confronted my daughter at the game yesterday &amp; told her "I'm an attorney." (I laughed at that one). The mom had approached the coach of the varsity team complaining plus told my daughter that "none of the parents like you". My daughter couldn't care less. </p><p>The principal had previous encounters with the parents and described them as "problem parents" and gave my daughter his full support. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Teaching" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Teaching</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Integrity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Integrity</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Cheating" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Cheating</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/CellPhones" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CellPhones</span></a></p>
Support the Resistance<p>4/6 The parent blamed my daughter for exposing her daughter's cheating &amp; claimed the action was because my daughter is racist. The student is bi-racial. The parent also accused my daughter of not playing her daughter in games, which was not true. She did pull her from one game when the cheating was exposed.</p><p>All the kids in question are HS freshmen. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Teaching" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Teaching</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Integrity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Integrity</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Cheating" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Cheating</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/CellPhones" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CellPhones</span></a></p>
Support the Resistance<p>3/6 Sure enough, during the exam, the girl was caught using her phone to find exam answers &amp; her phone was taken until after class. The student earned a zero on the test, which dropped her grade from an "A" to a "C". </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Teaching" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Teaching</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Integrity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Integrity</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Cheating" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Cheating</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/CellPhones" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CellPhones</span></a></p>
Support the Resistance<p>2/6 The complaint didn't originate from anything on the field or in the dugout. Girls had been discussing how to cheat on an upcoming exam in her presence &amp; one girl described how she would do it. </p><p>My daughter contacted the other teacher &amp; told her about the student &amp; her plans. She did warn the girls first that they would be reported.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Teaching" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Teaching</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Integrity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Integrity</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Cheating" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Cheating</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/CellPhones" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CellPhones</span></a></p>
Support the Resistance<p>1/6 My daughter has taught HS for 17-18 years. She doesn't put up with BS from students or parents. She's also coaching the girls' junior varsity softball team, primarily because the 2 people, (both parents) who applied couldn't pass the district background check.</p><p>Yesterday, a parent of one of the players called her a racist &amp; even filed a complaint with her school principal. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Teaching" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Teaching</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Integrity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Integrity</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Cheating" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Cheating</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/CellPhones" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CellPhones</span></a></p>

NNN<p>Bonus round: if the idea of running open-source Android on your phone interests you, check-out GrapheneOS.&nbsp; </p><p>It mostly only runs on the Pixel series, and only while they are still supported by Google, raising costs to the $50/year range.&nbsp; But it is possibly the most secure phone operating system you can use.</p><p><a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/budget" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>budget</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/cellphones" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cellphones</span></a></p>
NNN<p>A Pixel 6a (for example) costs $121, can run with Google support for 2 years, then will probably be supported by LineageOS for at-least another 5.&nbsp; This can bring cost down &lt;$25/year... if you can keep your phone in one piece that long!</p><p><a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/budget" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>budget</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/cellphones" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cellphones</span></a></p>
NNN<p>Open-source Android software called "LineageOS" can make&nbsp; inexpensive phones last many years (search "lineageOS devices" for compatible models).&nbsp; This also gives monthly security updates, and runs faster without "bloatware."</p><p>Initial install of LineageOS can require running special software to unlock the bootloader. But Pixel phones are unlocked, so are the easiest to install LineageOS on, and are so cheap, there's not much point in buying the older ones.&nbsp;</p><p><a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/budget" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>budget</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/CellPhones" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CellPhones</span></a></p>
NNN<p>Typical phones get an annual security patch. Our family decided to use phones until 12 months after the last patch (when it would have received a patch, if still supported)</p><p>We search "end-of-life &lt;brand&gt;" &amp; compare yrs vs price on Swappa. IE: a Galaxy A25 5G has 3.5 years support left (so: 4.5 years usable by our standard), and costs $163 or $36/year. A Pixel 6A costs $121 and 4 usable years (=$40/yr)</p><p>We can find supported Android phones &lt;$50/year, or Apple for &lt;$100/yr</p><p><a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/budget" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>budget</span></a> <br><a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/CellPhones" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CellPhones</span></a></p>
NNN<p>Cell phones go out of support too fast, leaving you with the choice between "expensive &amp; wasteful", or "insecure".&nbsp;</p><p>Our family uses two strategies to minimize the cost, with reasonable security: maximizing years of support per-dollar; or using open-source software.</p><p>(1/5)</p><p><a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/budget" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>budget</span></a> <br><a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/CellPhones" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CellPhones</span></a></p>
