"We're increasingly at risk of going over the carbon budget and the temperature limit. We need extra efforts to reach net-negative emissions and bring down global warming," says PIK director Ottmar #Edenhofer, Chair of the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change, presenting the Board’s latest recommendations on carbon dioxide removals #CDR to the European Parliament’s ENVI Committee.

#EU exploring weaker 2040 climate goal
The European Commission wants to keep a 90 percent #emissions-cutting target but to change how countries calculate their progress.
The options being discussed range from allowing countries to defer steeper cuts to letting them count carbon reductions they pay for in other countries. Another idea would be to lean more on carbon that forests or technology can remove from the air."

I don’t usually share this disability attorney’s content because he’s a Floriduh man, but this one is interesting.

Even the first AI method he’s talking about would have led to me being denied. And ALJ in my appeal hearing called me out because of the language in my pain management records.
Do you know how they write that little blurb at the beginning of every visit that says something like “patient presented well orientated, dressed appropriately, able to follow along with care instructions, blah blah blah” that type of thing?
My pain management records always started like that literally copied and pasted from every visit, and in their blurb they mentioned that I can pay attention.
So the judge tried to tell me that I’m lying about troubles with ADHD because pain management said I could pay attention. Luckily they literally copied and pasted that first paragraph in every visit for two years so I could point out that that was just “copy pasta” and I could also explain that pain management never evaluated my attention span, they’ve never done any test to evaluate my attention because they are pain management.
But if AI saw that I might be kicked off disability.
By the way some of this stuff was implemented a couple years ago during the last administration. But I know none of you wanna hear about that.

Well, that's a very quick "unsubscribe". Utter nonsense. The emerging #CDR industry needs (is begging for) smart regulation....The #EU doing so is not "micromanaging"
All CO2 emissions can be brought to zero, and this should be priority #1. Haphazardly throwing CDR at existing emissions is not a "tool to reach net zero faster", but rather a recipe for mitigation deterrence
Only then, once we (hopefully) reach net zero, might CDR be a useful tool to push negative emissions forward
“To achieve its #Climate targets, #EU must quickly scale up carbon dioxide removals #CDR while pursuing deep emissions cuts,” comments @esabcc_eu Chair & PIK Director Ottmar #Edenhofer on ESABCC’s new report. Extended emitter responsibility within #EUETS.
The daunting physics of carbon removal
"The [American Physical Society] report summarizes the current state of available carbon dioxide removal (#CDR) technologies and outlines recommendations for policymakers.
Above all, the report emphasizes that in most cases, cutting current carbon emissions is easier and less costly than large-scale, engineered carbon dioxide removal efforts may ever be."

"For most countries around the world, sourcing energy entirely from wind, solar, geothermal, and hydropower by 2050 would reduce their #energy needs and costs, improve air quality, and help slow climate change, according to a study.
These benefits, the authors say, could be realized at a fraction of the cost of implementing technologies that remove carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air and capture it from stationary emitters like industrial smokestacks."

Moritz Adam and co-authors are benchmarking carbon dioxide removal #CDR through Sun-driven #co2 conversion.
Main takeaways:
Unwanted indirect climate effects are negligible
Energy requirements are substantial
Achieving high efficiencies is crucial to avoiding land use conflicts
Accelerating emission reductions now is essential!

The good news (https://academic.oup.com/plankt/article/46/2/219/7595367?login=false) - the high pressure of the deep #sea decreases the degradation rate of organic #carbon, so biomass that makes the deep sea stay there longer.
The bad news (https://www.int-res.com/abstracts/meps/v679/p31-45/) - temperature increases the degradation rate, and the deep #ocean is getting warmer.
Combined, there are some interesting implications for organic-based
#CDR.
