The Streets of Melbourne<p>These gorgeous plants, or ground dwelling shrubs are found in Victoria right through to northern Queensland, normally in open dry forest or heathland. </p><p>It’s is the <a href="https://aus.social/tags/BanksiaSpinulosa" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BanksiaSpinulosa</span></a>, commonly known as the hairpin banksia. </p><p>These ones have been displaying like this for over two months now and their heads are quite woody (internally) with loads of rigid spikes, I guess you’d call them, that grow and form around the circumference.</p><p>These will remain as pictured, until early winter I read with interest. </p><p>I love the range of subtle colours and the fine detail of these things. The Streets of Melbourne<p><a href="https://aus.social/tags/BanksiaSpinulosa" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BanksiaSpinulosa</span></a>, sometimes referred to the hairpin banksia, is a woody shrub, of the genus <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Banksia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Banksia</span></a> in the family <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Proteaceae" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Proteaceae</span></a>.</p><p>It’s native to eastern Australia. </p><p>Widely distributed, it is usually found in open dry forest or heathland from Victoria to northern Queensland.</p><p>These are prolific producers of nectar. Banksias in general, are a vital part of the food chain in the Australian bush. Birds, bats, rats, possums and bees rely on this wonderful food source. </p><p>These pictured are adorned with single flower spikes, say 1 centimetre long (1/2 inch) that generally contains hundreds of tightly packed spikes (flowers). </p><p>I felt the red one and the spiked section (I think it’s called an ‘axis’) is like a woody mass and the spikes are course and rigid. Not sharp. </p><p>I love the yellow ones.
