SnookerPRO<p>Over the past eleven days, Bosnian audiences have had their first chance to watch top-quality snooker in the capital of Sarajevo. Hotel Hills Ilidža was the scene of the Q Tour Global Play-Offs, one of the tournaments offering professional tour cards ultimately won by <a href="https://snookerpro.de/artikel/sarkhosh-shehab-und-jones-gewinnen-q-tour-playoffs/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Duane Jones, Amir Sarkosh, and Mohammed Shehab</a>, as well as the European Championships in four different age groups. <em>An article by our guest author <a href="https://twitter.com/farahk147" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Farah</a>.</em></p><p><strong>An unprecedented event</strong></p><p>Snooker fans in Bosnia and Herzegovina do not typically have opportunities to watch live matches, barring the local league. I can vaguely remember promises of exhibition matches being held here almost ten years ago, but nothing has ever come of that. Some central European capitals had previously brought snooker stars closer to our audience, and fans including myself took the chance and travelled to the likes of Ljubljana, Budapest, and Vienna to personally experience what we got accustomed to on our television sets. Indeed, it is difficult to find a Sarajevan who is not familiar with snooker and at least the top players, particularly those of the older generations.</p><p><strong>Sarajevo: Centre of amateur snooker for two weeks</strong></p><p>The announcement of these tournaments coming to Sarajevo was surprising to say the least. This city is not usually on the radar for international sports and cultural events. However, outside the snooker bubble not much effort was made to publicize the tournaments beforehand. If I weren’t connected to snooker accounts on social media, I doubt I would have found out they were happening even a day prior to the start.</p><p>Thankfully, the coverage in local media outlets increased once the play started. Naturally, the biggest star in the headlines was Mark Williams, despite not being the one competing in any of the tournaments. The legendary Welshman visited Sarajevo with his son Joel who participated in the U16 event, and his visit itself was a big deal for the local news agencies. He made the news again by complimenting the organization of the European. Among the 15 Bosnian representatives Adel Kalabušić from Union Jack Sarajevo was the closest to reaching the knock-out phase, narrowly missing out due to the frame difference. Despite that, all the wins our players achieved are a big success and the experience will certainly help them moving forward.</p><p>The final of the main event between Robbie McGuigan and Craig Steadman was broadcast on Arena Sport, one of the region’s biggest sports channels. The referee in charge was Almedin Hodžić. He is the only Bosnian EBSA-certified referee currently at Class 2 level, also a popular figure in the local community, tirelessly working on promoting the sport and educating future officials. Mario-Željo Milošević was the commentator for the match, a seven-time champion of Bosnia and Herzegovina who had also previously participated in the Championships and achieved a win in the group stage. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmuYFJblnnA" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">You can watch the final on YouTube</a>.</p><p>The success of our players would have never been possible without the late, great Zijad Redžić Zizi, the owner of the first snooker club in Sarajevo, Union Jack, our beloved coach and great friend not only to those interested in snooker, but to virtually everyone in the city. He sadly lost his battle with cancer in March 2022. The European Billiards and Snooker Association posted a touching tribute to one of the true legends of Sarajevo, the universally beloved man who is single-handedly responsible for the popularization of snooker in Bosnia and Herzegovina.</p> <a href="https://www.facebook.com/OfficialEBSA/posts/pfbid08ADWggK6ZB7kBpM8BvmJvcr8i2cg7aVndLhWsnnpA7UpJJjcuEALi5rNgNDJcdHWl" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"></a><p></p><p>Click the picture to access the Facebook post.</p> <p><strong>Good omens</strong></p><p>Bosnia and Herzegovina is not the only Balkan country that hosted a significant snooker tournament during this season. The WSF Championships and the Albanian Women’s Open were held in Golem, Albania, also attracting a large number of top snooker players. Events like these never fail to bring in many players from the region due to the convenience of not having to travel too far and spend too much in order to gain experience. Not to mention the hassle of, for example, getting a visa for the UK if you’re a player from Bosnia. The spread of snooker through continental Europe is certainly getting more traction with the events advancing further south.</p><p>From a personal perspective, the events held in Sarajevo were a huge success. Play on 16 tables simultaneously went without a hitch, except for the odd scoreboard issue. Although the audience mostly consisted of players waiting for their turn and members of their teams, there were locals popping in and out of matches, enjoying the occasion. I also appreciated the live streams, for when I couldn’t be there in person, as well as for people watching from other parts of the globe. SnookerPRO<p>Amir Sarkhosh, Duane Jones und Mohammed Shehab gewinnen die Playoffs und qualifizieren sich damit ebenso wie Q Tour Sieger für die Main Tour 2024/25. Neben einem Tourticket für die kommenden zwei Jahre werden sie auch als Wildcards zur Weltmeisterschaft im nächsten Monat eingeladen.</p><p>Die Playoffs der Q Tour wurden in Sarajevo zeitgleich zu den dort stattfinden Europameisterschaften ausgespielt. Insgesamt 20 Spieler qualifizierten sich über die Rangliste der europäischen Q Tour und je 2 über die kleineren Touren im mittleren Osten und in Amerika. Die beiden Qualifikanten über die Pazifik Tour sagten ihren Start ab und wurden durch Nachrücker aus Europa ersetzt. Je acht Spieler traten dann um je eine Tourkarte gegeneinander an.</p><p><strong>Q Tour: Glückliche Sieger, enttäuschte Verlierer</strong></p><p>Die Finalspiele wurden über die Distanz von „best of 19“ ausgetragen und alle drei waren knapp. Shehab setzte ich im Finale mit 10–8 gegen Nachrücker Chang Yu Kiu durch. Amir Sarkhosh konnte ein Comeback von Iulian Boiko abwehren und gewann ebenfalls 10–8. Zwischen den beiden Walisern Duane Jones und Liam Davies gab es einen Decider. Nachdem Davies anfangs einem Rückstand hinterher lief, lag er zwischenzeitig sogar 9–7 vorne. Der erfahrene Ex-Profi Jones hatte dann aber das bessere Ende für sich.</p><p>Bemerkenswert ist, dass zwei der drei Playoff-Sieger, Sarkhosh und Shehab, sich über die Q Tour Middle East qualifizierten.</p><p>Für Liam Davies und Iulian Boiko waren es sicherlich sehr bittere Niederlagen. Nicht zum ersten Mal scheiterten sie nur knapp an der Tourqualifikation. Auch die anderen Teilnehmenden, wie Florian Nüßle oder der jüngst gekrönte englische Amateurmeister Steven Hallworth hatten sich sicher mehr erhofft. Für Davies, Boiko und Nüßle und ebenso für Antoni Kowalski, Umut Dikme und ein paar weitere gibt es bei den Europameisterschaften aber noch eine oder zwei weitere Chancen. Zuvor wurden schon die U16- und U18-Varianten ausgetragen. Den U16-Titel konnte sich Vladislav Gradinari im Finale gegen Riley Powell sichern. Gradinari erreichte dann auch das U18 Finale. Dort traf er auf den Titelverteidiger Révész Bulcsú. Révész gewann ein sehr unterhaltsames Finale mit 4–0. Es war knapper als das Resultat erwarten ließ, denn alle Frames wurden erst auf die letzten Bälle entschieden. SnookerPRO<p>Durch den Gewinn der WSF Junior Championship in Albanien schreibt Révész Bulcsú Geschichte, als erster ungarischer Spieler qualifiziert sich der 17-Jährige für die Snooker Main Tour. Ng On Yee gewinnt die WWS Albanian Women’s Open.</p><p>Derzeit spielen die Top-Amateure der Welt in Albanien in zwei Turnieren um den Einzug auf die Snooker Main Tour. Die Junior*innen-Version der WSF Championship für bis zu 18-Jährige ging heute zu Ende. In einem Feld um Mitfavoriten Iulian Boiko, Liam Davies und Oliver Sykes <a href="https://worldsnookerfederation.org/brilliant-bulcsu-makes-history-for-hungary/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">setzte sich Révész Bulcsú im Finale mit 5–3 gegen den ebenfalls zum Favoritenkreis zählenden Chinesen Gong Chenzhi durch</a>. Neben dem Titel WSF Junior Champion gewinnt <a href="https://snookerpro.de/spieler/revesz-bulcsu/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Révész Bulcsú</a>, der U18-Europameister von 2023, auch eine Tourkarte für die kommenden zwei Jahre auf der Main Tour. Damit ist er der erste Snookerprofi aus Ungarn. <em>Üdvözöljük, Bulscú!</em></p><p>Parallel zu den WSF Championships wurden im Grand Blue Fafa Resort in Golem, Albanien, auch die Albanian Women’s Open der WWS-Tour ausgetragen. Wie schon bei den Belgian Women’s Open vor zwei Wochen trafen die beiden Führenden der Weltrangliste im Finale aufeinander. Dabei glückte Ng On Yee die Revanche gegen Mink Nutcharut. SnookerPRO<p>Er war so nah dran an der Sensation, doch dann hat es nicht ganz gereicht. Steven Hallworth erreicht beim Shoot-Out sensationell das Halbfinale. Wir blicken zurück und sprechen dabei nicht nur über Spaß und höchst merkwürdige Nicknames, sondern auch über Geld.</p><p>Mit Siegen über Jamie Jones, Mark Joyce, Alexander Ursenbacher, Long Zehuang und Dominic Dale hatte Steven am Samstag Abend das Halbfinale erreicht, wo er gegen den späteren Sieger Mark Allen ausschied.</p><p>Ehrlich gesagt war ich nach dem Halbfinale sprachlos, sodass meine Kollegin Målin <a href="https://snookerpro.de/artikel/mark-allen-gewinnt-shoot-out/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">den Finalartikel übernehmen musste</a>. Sie hat dabei schon über die meisten Highlights des Turniers berichtet.</p><p>Ich konnte nach der Achterbahn der Gefühle kaum einen klaren Gedanken fassen und fragte mich, wie es Steven selber jetzt wohl geht. Seine Antwort war ganz klar: „Ich bin enttäuscht. Ich dachte, ich würde vielleicht den Pokal mit nach Hause nehmen, aber Mark war einfach zu gut.“ Das kann ich gut verstehen. Doch über die Enttäuschung sollte er nicht vergessen, was ihm Tolles bei diesem Turnier gelungen ist.</p><p>Als wir den <a href="https://snookerpro.de/meldungen/sponsoring-von-steven-hallworth/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Sponsoring-Pool gestartet haben</a>, um Steven mit den Kosten für die Teilnahme am Shoot-Out zu helfen, haben wir nicht zu träumen gewagt, dass er die Chance so dermaßen gut nutzen würde. Wir dachten vorsichtig an ein gewonnenes Match. Vielleicht zwei. Eine der Spenderinnen antwortete zwar im Vorfeld auf meine Bermerkung, Steven solle sich endlich wieder für die Tour qualifizieren „<span class="">Das könnte mit dem Titel beim Shoot Out über das Jahresranking klappen. 😉</span>“ Aber wirklich dran geglaubt? Nein, eher nicht. Doch es wurden viele Daumen gedrückt und heftig mitgefiebert.</p><p><strong>Steven Hallworth souverän in ersten Runden des Shoot-Out</strong></p><p>Seine erste Partie gegen Jamie Jones brachte er (von außen gesehen) ganz kontrolliert mit 48–14 über die Bühne. Meine Chats waren voller Bizeps-Emojis und Party-Popper. Ich suchte nach unserem Logo auf Stevens Oberarm, das leider trotz seiner langen Zeit am Tisch kaum zu sehen war. Nach dem Sieg tanzte ich vor Freude auf dem Tisch. FINALTAG!</p><p>Am Finaltag wurde es dann noch aufregender. Ich konnte mein Glück gar nicht fassen, dass ich noch BEIDE favorisierten Spieler im Rennen hatte, Mark Davis und Steven Hallworth. Steven musste gegen Alexander Ursenbacher ran und aus der Lincolnschen Wurst war inzwischen „Sizzling Steven Hallworth“ geworden. Twitter badete in Wurst-GIFs.</p><p>Gleich der erste lange Ball von Steven ging nicht rein und der Spielball öffnete die Roten. Doch auch Alex Ursenbacher tat sich schwer. Er verstellte sich und das Break war schnell zu Ende. Dreieinhalb Minuten vor Schluss zeigte der Spielstand ganze 9 Punkte Unterschied. Am Ende war es wieder ein exzellenter Einsteiger, der Steven den entscheidenden Vorteil inklusive Framegewinn brachte. Von mir anschließend nach dem Zustand seiner Nerven gefragt, antwortete er kurz und knapp: „In bits. 😂“</p><p><strong>Muffensausen und Daumendrücken</strong></p><p>Im Achtelfinale gegen Long Zehuang spielten sie zwei Minuten Safeties, bevor Long den Spielball versenkte. Aus der Ball-in-Hand-Situation machte Steven einen Vorsprung von 34–0, bevor er safe aussteigen musste. Genau zur Hälfte der Spielzeit blieb mir fast das Herz stehen: Steven zeigte ein Foul auf Rot an und Long bekam Ball-in-Hand. Und machte daraus genau einen Punkt, denn er verschoss Schwarz vom Spot. Steven baute seinen Vorsprung aus und auch wenn Long zwei Minuten vor Schluss noch an den Tisch kam, reichte es nicht mehr, um diesen noch einzuholen. Neal Foulds und Phil Studd philosophierten zu diesem Zeitpunkt schon über Stevens Rückkehr auf die Tour, falls er das Shoot-Out gewinnen würde. Mein Adrenalinspiegel war langsam am Limit. Dass Mark Davis parallel auch seine Partien gewann, ließ mich vergleichsweise kühl.</p><p>Publikumsliebling Dominic Dale <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8QFOFaSOMk&list=UULF4C_hahN8EWl7VxbakIGXhQ&index=9" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">hatte im Viertelfinale</a> die erste Chance und spielte bei 19–0 safe. Mit Geduld erspielte Steven sich eine gute Chance, verstellte sich aber bei 19–9 auf die Farbe und hätte anschließend beinahe den Spielball gelocht. Noch waren 2:45 Minuten auf der Uhr, aber meine Nerven waren schon extrem angespannt. Dale kam an einen offenen Tisch. Und spielte das böseste Misscue, das du in so einer Situation haben kannst. Der Spielball hüpfte über den Tisch, ohne Rot zu treffen. Foul, Ball in Hand für Steven. Den Rest der Zeit nutzte er für ein schönes Break zum Sieg.</p><p><strong>Persönliche Bestleistung!</strong></p><p>Zum ersten Mal in seiner Karriere stand er im Halbfinale eines Ranglistenturniers! Ich gönnte mir wieder ein Tänzchen auf dem Tisch und im Chat mit den anderen kamen zu den Bizeps jetzt die Partygesichter. Mark Davis‘ Ausscheiden nahm ich gelassen, obwohl ich ihm von Herzen einen Ranglistentitel gegönnt hätte. Aber wen hätte ich denn anfeuern sollen, wenn Steven und er dort aufeinandergetroffen wären?</p><p>Im Halbfinale musste Steven zum ersten Mal in diesem Shoot-Out den Anstoß spielen und ließ prompt etwas für Mark Allen liegen. Wie es weiterging, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91k1lJvS8gs&list=UULF4C_hahN8EWl7VxbakIGXhQ&index=5" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">könnt ihr hier gucken</a>. Suboptimale Safety und wenig Glück für Steven und am Ende stand es 60–8 für Allen.</p><p><strong>Experiment Spenden/Sponsorship ein voller Erfolg</strong></p><p>Der Hauptgrund, warum ich bei diesem Turnier so extrem mit Steven mitgefiebert habe, ist natürlich die Tatsache, dass SnookerPRO und einige Menschen aus der Community ihn für das Shoot-Out finanziell unterstützt haben. Mir war es wichtig, dass Menschen sich beteiligen und sich anschließend an seinem Erfolg mitfreuen konnten – was sie auch getan haben! Und ich selbst habe schon lange nicht mehr so viel Freude an einem Snookerturnier gehabt.</p><p>Steven ist für die Unterstützung sehr dankbar. Ich möchte diesen Dank ausdrücklich an die Menschen weitergeben, die sich beteiligt haben. Wir haben dazu wesentlich beigetragen, dass Steven hier ein gutes Preisgeld mitnehmen konnte und so für die nächste Zeit den finanziellen Druck verringern konnte.</p><p>Außerdem haben wir viel gelernt über den Unterschied von Sponsoring durch Geschäftsleute und Spenden von Privatpersonen. Steven konnte erleben, dass wildfremde Menschen sich für seine Entwicklung interessieren und bereit sind, dafür Geld zu geben, ohne eine Gegenleistung zu erwarten. Und die Beteiligten haben die Erfahrung machen können, dass es keine Riesensummen braucht, um etwas zu bewegen.</p><p>Doch der nächste Schritt ist, einen Sponsoring durch eine Firma zu finden. Denn das Preisgeld fließt zum Teil in Stevens Lebensunterhalt, da er letztes Jahr seinen anderen Job verloren hat und die Kosten für die Turnierteilnahmen stehen weiterhin im Raum. Und einem Publikum, das sich die 3‰ nicht so lautstark anmerken lässt.
