@landley @jschauma @ryanc @0xabad1dea yeah, the exhaustion problem would've been shoved back with a #64bit or sufficiently delayed by a 40bit number.

Unless we also hate #NAT and expect every device to have a unique static #IP (which is a #privacy nightmare at best that "#PrivacyExtensions" barely fixed.)

  • I mean they could've also gone the #DECnet approach and use the #EUI48 / #MAC-Address (or #EUI64) as static addressing system, but that would've made #vendors and not #ISPs the powerful forces of allocation. (Similar to how technically the #ICCID dictates #GSM / #4G / #5G access and not the #IMEI unless places like Australia ban imported devices.

I guess using a #128bit address space was inspired by #ZFS doing the same before, as the folks who designed both wanted to design a solution that clearly will outlive them (way harder than COBOL has outlived Grace Hopper)...

If I was @BNetzA I would've mandated #DualStack and banned #CGNAT (or at least the use of CGNAT in #RFC1918 address spaces) as well as #DualStackLite!

Krzysztof 'deadwood' Śmiechowicz has released the first version of AROS for x86-64, labelled "stable". The basic system is available in two versions: as a bootable ISO file or in a 'hosted' edition that runs under Linux. Virtual machines (VMware, Virtualbox or QEMU) are recommended as a test environment for this first release:

@JessTheUnstill @bohwaz @punkfairie @ajsadauskas @tomiahonen @fuchsiii Exactly...

Coincidentially, that's why #Android (and #iOS) doesn't let users have #root access because billions of devices owned by mostly "#TechIlliterates" that hardly get #SecurityUpdates would be an even bigger risk if they didn't boot a locked-down #ROM image, thus only allowing for #malware in user-privilegued userspace!

Cuz having a mobile OS that shoves everything through #Tor and only allows #userspace-Apps in the form modern web technologies would be a big #security and #privacy gain.

  • Not to mention #amd64 is on it's way out and inevitably they gotta have to transition to supporting #arm64 and eventually #RISCv-#64bit at some point.

And yes, OFC some #minimalist #linux-#distro like #TinyCore also runs fine on it, which isn't a surprise given that it's a 20MB ISO and a 512MB RAM, of which 8MB are per default occupied for VRAM aka. the #i915GML's framebuffer.

Needless to say I've to see if @bunsenlabs even runs on this thing and I know that anything #64bit is a complete non-starter as it's just an #i586 / #ix86 machine, so any supported mainstream distro is a nope.

  • Most likely #RasberryPiOS is the most up-to-date option with the biggest user community AFAICT...

So why not start a game jam for the #Atari Jaguar? Well, let's do it then: it is on now over on itch 😎. The jam will last for six months so that hopefully a few people will find the time to join in. Oh, and I'll even throw in some price money for the first place. Got @ctrlaltrees and Carl Forhan from Songbird Productions to join me in judging the entries, which maybe sounds a bit more posh than it should. You can read all about it under the link below. Thanks for spreading the word and hoping to see some nice games. Cheers!

#AltOS developed by #Moscow, #Russia-based #BasaltSPO has been recompiled to support #China's #Loongson #CPU based on #LoongArch architecture.
Alt is now first Russian #operatingsystem capable of running on Loongson's processors based on #64bit LoongArch, such as #LS5000 and #LS6000 series, which some in Russia consider alternatives to #x86 CPUs. The distro is based on the unstable, experimental branch of the #Sisyphus project, a stable release is set for Q1 2024.

🕹️ As you know, I'm very much into the Atari Jaguar and collecting for it. Here's something which I am not sure if mentioned before: There is a variant, certainly a production error, featuring a blue Skylar on the cartridge's label. I've seen carts like this before, but now I had to get one and be sure the last time I saw one.

The picture shows a comparision between the regular green headed cartridge version of Cybermorph and the blue headed one - let's call it the Eiffel 65 version 😂.

Maybe the printer had some problem with yellow in the CMYK color mix, as the "64-Bit" dots, which are yellow on the regular label, are nearly blank on this one. Anyway, it makes for a neat little variant. From what I have seen so far, this only applies to the 1994 version carts with 1 MB.

- in #RadioAstronomy, #GIMP is the standard since they use #64bit "Colour Space".
- #Audacity is the go-to solution for a lot of #RF and non-Voice/Music #Audio work.
- #WebCall (1:1 #E2EE) & #JitsiMeet (#Videoconferencing) are excellent tools being used for #Videocalling.
- @torproject #Tor is the go-to communications solution for state and non-state actors.
- #Monero :monero: is the black market currency #1

All are FLOSS'd!
