> On Thursday, NHTSA said it had discovered in 16 separate instances when this occurred that Autopilot “aborted vehicle control less than one second prior to the first impact,” suggesting the driver was not prepared to assume full control over the vehicle.
> CEO Elon Musk has often claimed that accidents cannot be the fault of the company, as data it extracted invariably showed Autopilot was not active in the moment of the collision.
Sigh. 🤦♀️
Star Trek, but each colony planet (and every colonist born on one) has to pay rent, to a consortium of hedge funds mostly located on Earth and Vulcan. Also planetary rent doubled in the last ten years, and continues to rise. The entire Federation assumes this is normal, and is actively recruiting each new world it encounters into this scheme.
Hey Fediverse - feel free to boost this question.
Is anyone developing or does anyone know of "brain training" phone/tablet games SPECIFICALLY aimed at users with dementia.
I'm thinking like, bejewelled, hidden object, endless matching, <whatever>scapes, but they need to be ad-free, low-distraction, big visuals, low stakes/low stress.
I almost want toddler busy-games. But for senior adults. SagoBiggie!
Chromebooks foisted on students? Teachers monitoring what children do outside of the classroom via nonfree software? Surveillance of children is common, and it's at your child's school, too. Support #FreeSoftware https://u.fsf.org/32h
For my American friends and neighbors this sounds well and good until you remember that you do NOT have a Fourth & Fifth Amendment right to NOT have your picture or fingerprint taken.
In other words, thanks to this, the Police / ICE / CBP can and will force you to provide your finger or face for TouchID or FaceID to unlock your device with or without your permission.
The Fifth Amendment at least protects you from being forced to reveal your password, and everyone has “the right to remain silent”.
So while this may assuredly be a giant leap forward in device security, it’s an even greater step back in civil liberties.

@humanetech @lightweight @stragu @EU_Commission @jgoerzen I asked a boss “why are we using MS Word and not LaTeX?” He said “because no one here knows LaTeX”. Then I asked a prof “why aren’t the students using LaTeX?” He said “because it’s not used in industry”. In this vicious cycle, I blame the school. The school should be /ahead/ of industry teaching what the industry needs to learn, not be a follower to industry.

Good address: https://www.apple.com/
See the difference?
Me neither. The first one is using Cyrillic charset, the 2nd one - regular Latin
So, how to avoid getting shagged by the Bad Guys?
Not sure about other browsers; in Firefox, you go to about:config, find the network.IDN_show_punycode option and set it to true. From now on, any URLs based on charsets other than Latin will be shown as hex codes.
You're welcome.

You know that first time you installed an ad blocker and got to experience the whole "the internet, except we have clean running water and penicillin now" feeling? It's like that at the operating system level. It's really, really remarkable.
(Linux people: I get it. I know. If you didn't get your first distro on _one floppy disk_ I've been doing this longer than you. I'm on Windows because most of our users are.)

This is still an amazing opening paragraph.
"Having a monarchy next door is a little like having a neighbour who’s really into clowns and has daubed their house with clown murals, displays clown dolls in each window and has an insatiable desire to hear about and discuss clown-related news stories. More specifically, for the Irish, it’s like having a neighbour who’s really into clowns and, also, your grandfather was murdered by a clown."

So I've gradually opened up about this as the risk has decreased, but I think it's time I can publicly share something that happened to me this year:
I was part of an investigation into a possible violation of the CFAA. Or, more accurately, I was being investigated as a suspect.
TL;DR: I ethically disclosed an security vulnerability - SQLi leading to account info, plaintext passwords. That same issue was, according to the investigators, abused by someone (possibly me, they thought).
Grossed out by cats. Very glad that I learned how to filter out most of those nonsense cat pics plaguing the Fediverse.
